This is the 10th studio album of the British My Dying Bride - and the band have been through changes. For Lies I Sire is presenting 3 new members, but MDB haven't changed drastically, they still dark and gloomy. But keyboardist Katie Stone is also adding some violin parts!
They kick off with the gloomy My Body, A Funeral which offers beside the majestic vocals of Aaron Stainthorpe also some spoken word parts. A bit heavier is Fall With Me, a guitar-driven track with fast drumming parts. Towards the end it has a slightly aggressive touch. Bass and guitars are slowly opening up the title track, but then they add heavy riffs and powerful drums. A doomy tune where they switch between the slow acoustic passages and the powered parts. One of my favorites is Echoes From A Hollow Soul, coz the song can surprise you with a piano passage and varying vocals. A doomy tune with heavy riffs and vocals which go from suffering to mourning. If they would have added some violin parts, it would have supported the atmosphere and made the song even better. The violin returns with Shadowhaunt - a mournful song which got even more depth with the violin. Unfortunately the violin is just use at the opening passage and towards the end. Another heavy one - and a bit faster - is A Chapter In Loathing with fast riffing and the vocals tend towards black and death metal. Somehow this tune sticks out, offers some variety... After a break they ease off a bit, but they are still heavy... more power doom with growls. Last, but not least Death Triumphant! A heavy up-tempo tune with an epic touch and the violin adds melody and for a moment dominates the song. But then the guitars take over during the slow part. They get back to the heavy riffing at the end.
Fans of the British should like the new opus and if you want to check out some songs, I recommend: Santuario di sangue, Echoes From A Hollow Soul and Shadowhaunt.
