Testimony 2 Live In Los Angeles

Testimony 2 Live In Los Angeles
(InsideOut Music - 2011)

Fans of Neal Morse can count on him to deliver something new regularly. Testimony 2 was released a few months ago, and even before the album came out Mr. Morse was on the road. In L.A. he recorded the show for another live album - Testimony 2 Live In Los Angeles. And again it's value for money, you get a 3-CD set and a double DVD! The first CD kicks off with Lifeline, followed by Leviathan and The Separated Man, then an edited version of the Sola Scriptura album follows! CD 2 offers Seeds Of Gold, Testimony I (Part5) and Reunion. And what makes the album special is that the American band features the guys who wrote the songs with Neal Morse. So you hear Mike Portnoy, Randy George, Eric Brenton, Rick Altizer and Mark Leniger playing Testimony 2 from start to finish (CD3). The line-up is completed by keyboarder Nathan Girard and Nathan Brenton on cello and guitar. It's pure fun to listen to these virtuosos. And fans of Neal Morse's prog rock will enjoy every minute of the concert performance. Unfortunately I can only give you the details of the DVD quoting the biography. Especially for fans outside the US it's interesting to see the DVD as the US band differs a lot from the European touring band. But I'm glad I saw them in Germany, coz it was a great night and I think everybody who loves the music of Neal Morse will love this DVD / CD package.

Testimony 2

Testimony 2
(InsideOut Music - 2011)

In 2003 Neal Morse presented Testimony, the first part of his autobiographic sonic journey. As in the past Neal Morse played most instruments himself, but also hooked up friends like Mike Portnoy and Randy George.

Piano slowly leads you into Testimony 2, the opening track is called Mercy Street, a symphonic progressive rock tune. It's the opening track of Part Six which offers 4 tracks. Overture is an instrumental piece with symphonic elements, progressive sounds, retro parts and a jazzy edge. With Time Changer he has record a special treat for fans of his former band Spock's Beard, as here his former band mates joined him. Only Ryo Dejaneiro is missing. A heavy bass riffs dominating the songs, the song about the beginning of Spock's Beard is an almost catchy and shows references to 70's prog rock, art rock and brilliant vocal arrangements / counter part vocals. Jayda is about his daughter who was born with a hole in her heart which disappeared, this miracle turned him to Christianity. Jayda is a kind of singer / songwriter song, but presented with an orchestral arrangement. A very personal and touching tune. Kudos.

Part Seven starts with Nighttime Collectors, a rock riff and Hammond organ is what's sticking out at the opening passage. Quite 70's. Later the song becomes more progressive, a 70's prog rock tune. A bit like Deep Purple meets ELP. The sonic journey continues with Time Has Come Today. Then the atmosphere changes with Jesus' Blood as the situation changes - coming home from tour and going to church, it's like two worlds. Another track which shows his singer / songwriter side, but it becomes a slow, prog rock song. A very intensive tune with a dash of melancholy. Great guitar solo. One of my favorites on Testimony 2!
The Truth Will Set You Free is a prog rock tune, guitar-driven and with a splash of fusion here and symphonic elements there. Later in this 8+ minute long tune he embedded some melodic passages which are almost pop rock like with it's catchy vocal line.

Part Eight begins with Chance Of A Lifetime which is a bit ELP-ish. The first 2+ minutes are instrumental, then Morse starts singing. The tune is spiced up with a saxophone part, again he takes you onto a sonic ride which shows well the emotional roller coaster he was going through at that time of his life. Jesus Bring Me Home is another balladesque tune with a singer / songwriter touch, another personal tune. Road Dog Blues is just over 3 minutes, the shortest track on Testimony 2. A song which stands for the bright spirit he was in after making up his mind and changing his life. A melodic rocker with Hammond organ and an 80's style sax solo. It's For You is another roller coaster ride with heavy, progressive parts and slow, emotional passages. The last track of CD 1 and the closer of the Testimony sonic biography is called Crossing Over / Mercy Street Reprise. With more then 11 minutes it's the longest track on the album and gives a lot of space for twists and turns.

CD2 is like a bonus to the autobiographic songs, Absolute Beginner is a kind of happy tune, less progressive than some other tunes. A song easy to get into due to the hook line and the 'singing' guitar passage. Supernatural offers retro prog elements, singer / songwriter passages and a choir which reminds me of Supertramp... The last track is Seeds Of Gold which begins with a reference to baroque music, this epic tune is just shy of 26 minutes! And so you can expect he offers different sounds, touching different genres incl. prog rock, neo-classical sound, singer / songwriter - you name it. Well, everything in the sound universe of Neal Morse somehow found it's way into this opus. And so it's no easy listening, it's a challenge! But a challenge fans of Neal Morse will be pleased to take.

Some fans will still wait for another album in the vein of his Spock's Beard ones, but Neal Morse expanded his style - which is no news to the ones who listened to his solo albums. You will surely find references to his past, references to Spock's Beard - but that's it. Give Testimony 2 a chance. Get enchanted by tunes like Jayda, Jesus' Blood and The Truth Will Set You Free.

The album is available as a double CD as well as a special edition 3-disc box incl. a DVD The Making of Testimony Two. Additionally the new book Testimony - The inspirational and spiritual journey of a prog rock musician is ready for you.

So Many Roads

So Many Roads
(InsideOut Music - 2010)

Neal Morse is back with another live album - So Many Roads. Fans of Mr. Morse get quite frequently new stuff to listen to, this time it's a 3-CD live recording from the 2008 tour. The songs been recorded at different shows, so everybody who saw Neal Morse at that tour will welcome this release.
So Many Roads shows Neal Morse and his European backing band performing a tight set which every fan of the former Spock's Beard should enjoy. Opening up with At Then End Of The Day they offer you about 3 hrs of live performance. Especially the medleys are interesting, coz they show Neal Morse and band differently. Okay, Questions Mark Medley and Testimedley aren't new, but still enjoyable. Due to the DVD release Sola Scriptura & Beyond in 2008 there aren't tracks from Sola Scriptura included, but I think many will welcome the older stuff anyway. Between the songs Neal Morse talks to the audience and you can hear that he's comfortable being on stage. The semi-acoustic The Way Home is a nice intermezzo, coz here the song is reduced to the basics. And with Author Of Confusion / I'm The Guy they go full force again, heading into a complex prog tune and later on offer some a cappella part before going back. It's the variety Neal Morse offers which makes this 3-CD box quite enjoyable. With about 12 minutes Help Me is one of the shorter tracks, but for me one of the highlights, coz I like the jazzy intermezzo and the way they echo the words musically. The closer of CD 3 is a medley of Stranger In Your Soul and Bridge Across Forever, a cool way to end the show.
If you have problems with Neal Morse's solo stuff, then this won't change your mind, but if you enjoy all stages of Morse's career - or saw him at that tour -, then you'll dig it!

Sola Scriptura

Sola Scriptura
(InsideOut Music - 2007)

Every prog fan knows Neal Morse through his work with Spock's Beard, after he left the band he worked with the all-star-project Transatlantic and since 2003 he's doing solo albums. On his solo work he usually works with drummer Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), bassist Randy George and partly the guitars are contributed by Paul Gilbert (ex-Mr. Big). Musically not much changed... progressive rock on a high level.
Sola Scriptura is a conceptual album about the life and struggles of the German monk Martin Luther. Morse is a born again Christian and since 2002 all his works are dedicated to his belief and so can be filed in the sub genre Cprog. But unfortunately the very ambitious work lyrically can't match the high level of the music. It seems that it's a common problem that born again Christians are follow the doctrine of their church and stop thinking. The lyrics are shallowbrained and so better don't listen to them at all! The 4 tracks kinda start with Augustinian putting the 95 theses on the church door, The conflict which came from it and The Conclusion. The songs vary from 29 minutes to almost 17 minutes - excluding Heaven In My Heart. I wonder why not using reminiscences to contemporary music... To cite clerical music of Luther's days? This shouldn't be a problem for the multi-instrumentalist and would have added something special to this piece.
Musically nothing new, but well done. Lyrically a good story told in shallow words. And why can't the listener skip to the single chapters of each song?
Fans of Mr. Morse will buy this anyway - and will love it. Everybody else who is in prog rock or Cprog might like it, but if you have any other of his solo albums, you might not need this...

Testimony

Testimony
(InsideOut Music - 2003)

Sometimes the unexpected happens... Dream Theater were the precursor and made progressive metal more popular, in their wake the American progressive metal band Spock's Beard made themselves known. They were the driving force in the scene, mainly multi-instrumentalist Neal Morse and his creativity made Spock's Beard special - especially live on stage. While Morse was still in Spock's Beard he already released solo records. Something changed his mind and he wanted to concentrate on his solo career and left the band. Everybody who knows Neal Morse and his endless creativity - obvious in the fruitful cooperation with the 'project' Transatlantic - expected that he soon would be back with new material. Testimony is his latest output. As he want to proof his endless creativity this release is a double CD with more then 2 hours of music!!!
The album tells his story, his life and his relation to God. Morse don't want to preach and he don't want to change peoples life. With Testimony Neal Morse leaves the easy-listening music of his solo albums behind and continues his high-class progressive metal compositions. Drummer extra-ordinary Mike Portnoy came to support Neal Morse on the album and there is a guest appearance of Kansas guitarist Kerry Livgren. Beside this well-known musicians he got a helping hand from some musicians of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. The album is very emotional and touching. Perfectly arranged and played compositions with lovely choirs. The outstanding style of drummer Mike Portnoy and the unique keyboards of the master himself add the special something. It's pure joy to listen to this album and it makes you looking forward to the coming European shows and curious how this will sound live.
I won't miss this event. I can just recommend to get the album and take the chance to see them live on tour! Btw, Mike Portnoy will be on this tour!

It's Not Too Late

It's Not Too Late
(InsideOut Music - 2001)

Everybody needs a break once in awhile! Okay, not everybody! Neal Morse - founder and head of the rising prog rock band Spock's Beard - seems to be full of energy, so that he uses every 'break' for new musical experiments and releases.
It seems to be not enough for him that he is busy with his main band doing studio and live albums, he's also part of the high-class project Transatlantic (Finally they announced a European tour for November 2001!!!), coz he just released his second solo album.
After the release of the self-titles debut in 1999 he now releases It's Not Too Late which again proofs the ostensible unlimited musical creativity of Mr. Morse.
On 13 songs Morse not just offer sounds for the Spock's Beard fan, the multi-talented musician is discovering spheres out-of-the-way of the complex prog genre. For sure their are some progressive part on the album, but at all Neal Morse is less complex and more personal in his compositions this time.
So he reaches levels which he just touched in balladesque songs with his main band. This fact makes the album audible to more people - not just for musicians - songs are more easily to listen to and more enjoyable.
Multi-instrumentalist Morse played all instruments beside the drums which are played by band companion Nick D'Virgilio and Morse also took over the vocal parts. And everyone who witnessed his abilities as a drummer on the last Spock's Beard tour will wonder how long it'll take until he will also do the drums on his solo records.
Enjoy the pop-prog songs which on high level until the next Spock's Beard BEARD release is in the stores.
