Malison Rogue

Malison Rogue
(Inner Wound Recordings - 2011)

Malison Rogue is another new band from Sweden, another one great band from this new bands invasion like Enforcer and Steelwing. But this time their Gods are not from the NWOBHM, their musical inspirations come from Queensrÿche and Fates Warning with some echoes from Europe and Edguy sometimes. How is it possible that this sounds combinations works together??? The answer is simple: It is possible, with a good combination. This first album for this band known as Ashes, is a mirror of what they are, a good band with tons of possibility for reaching the top!!
Zeb, Doc, Bjoerkborg and Peter Fury have made an interesting debut album produced by Mats Leven and mastered by Micke Lind, and from the first song Friend Or Foe we can appreciate how melodies and songwriting are really excellent. Fates Warning is the first band that resound in my head, but the next The Pain You Cause drive us to heavier territories, more speed and rage in this episode. The Griever is simply awesome, a song that could be in any Edguy or Europe album, a song with beautiful melodies and a wonderful chorus!!! My Mistakes will touch many hearts, a ballad that personally I will put in my car CD player.... This Lonely Road is still a song that remind me how Queensrÿche are so important in the metal scene, Scars is the longest track of this CD, something that we can call epic, but the word masterpiece is enough for this song, where different tempos, melodies built a good thing called 'cool song'!!! We're All Born Sinners seems come out from a German metal album of the '80s - like the first Sinner albums!! Excellent song with an old school taste, but with a modern arrangement!!! This debut album is closed by Everything Fades is a melodic song, very nice that reminds me something of the old TNT songbook.....
At the end we can consider this debut album one the biggest surprises of 2011, so I say: welcome Malison Rogue!!!!

Malison Rogue
(Inner Wound Recordings - 2011)

Sweden has produced many good metal groups during the times, and here we have a new group who mingles in with the others. Malison Rogue releases their debut CD, a 8-track piece. Generally they sound very mainstream, have no breath-taking new ideas, and the worst is that the songs is in the risk zone of being forgotten before they even get a change to proof themselves. Heavy metal and hard rock together, but there are no surprises that rises them above the mediocre level, and also the songs have a tendency of fading out when the first 2 minutes have relapsed. There are two good songs that stands in front: We're All Born Sinners, this track has a vital freshness and great heavy guitar work by axeman Bjoerkborg, quality creativity with humor and bite. The other good song here is My Mistakes, a fine ballad with good originality about it. The whole album is mastered by Mikael Lind who has worked with Ronnie James Dio, and on the song My Mistakes you can feel the connection to Dio's sound.
I hope that Malison Rogue can do some touring and get inspiration for a follow-up album, because despite of this tame debut, there are musical talents and it can only get better. No doubt they could have a good career, just need to plan it a little better. Some people compare elements of Malison Rogue with Iron Maiden, and I also had Iron Maiden in my mind when the album escaped the speakers, but Iron Maiden once again... not really, there are too many difference in the creative skills.
