American band Aska is presenting their 5th album which is simply called Absolute Power. Singer George Call some might know as the frontman of Omen... Musically Aska present powerful traditional metal. So they take you into the Aska world with Longships, a song which shows reminiscences to Dio, Iron Maiden and a dash Thin Lizzy. Fanfares and the sound of marching feet lead you into Legion, a guitar-driven song with a catchy refrain which shows melodic riffing and powerful vocals. At Her Ghost: Remains the drums seems to force them ahead... The song has an 80's vibe and is soon haunting you... The high-pitched vocals which seem to come from the distance give is a slight Savatage-ish touch, but the song itself has nothing in common with the Florida boys. After the interlude Until Death Do Us Part they present Vowbreaker, a real killer! Heavy, riff-based, melodic and catchy! Great guitar play. My favorite on Absolute Power! Another intense metal tune is Martyrer which will surprise you with some Mercyful Fate-like elements. In a different direction they'll take you with Freedom, a short instrumental intermezzo. Then the call of a muezzin takes you into the fast, heavy, guitar-driven Message From God. Invasion shows some Maiden-ish guitar passages, but it's always just a facet of their sound. The closer Warrior Poets has a lot Thin Lizzy in it, a lot of Irish folk melted into metal - like Thin Lizzy did it -, but is way heavier. Lots of fun anyway!
To me the album gets stronger on the second half... Don't get me wrong, the first tunes aren't bad at all, but if they would be as strong as the 2nd half, then they were close to the highest rating! On the way to a masterpiece!
