Analena is a Croation-Slovenian outfit which started back in 1997. The name isn't linked to singer Ana. It's Sanskrit - a historical Indo-Aryan language, one of the liturgical languages of Hinduism and Buddhism, and one of the 22 official languages of India. It is also declared as a Classical Language of India along with Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. - and means 'by the fire' of 'like a fire'... All this don't give you the slightest idea what to expect musically and the artwork isn't giving away anything, too. Their music can be roughly described as post-punk, screamo... The songs are heavy, riff-based, raw and noisy - spiced up with emotional screaming. The songs carry a punk vibe, anger - and a melodies. To get an idea of Analena check out Valley Of Things and Of With My Head. Partly male vocals are joining in. Partly a straight punk rocker, partly post-punk with screamo parts. It might sound awkward, but their sound is fascinating! Slowly and quite melodic they kick off Horror Vacui - but as you might expect, it won't stay this way! In visual art, horror vacui (literally: fear of empty spaces, also known as cenophobia) is the filling of the entire surface of an artwork with detail - says Wikipedia - and it somehow fits... It's like Analena try to fill every second of music to the maximum... Not by playing as much notes as possible, it's more about their energy and emotion. It's impossible to describe the sound of Analena, you have to listen yourself! I can only try to give you the slightest idea of what to expect - and still I will fail.
Everybody who is into post-punk and / or screamo should give them a try, let their music convince you! Analena is a model DIY band, they recorded the album on their own and they distribute it - with a little help of Plastichead (UK) and Stickfigure (USA) - and they are organizing their shows / tours on their own. So check them out at www.myspace.com/analena and if they play in your area, go to their show!
