Silent Waters

Silent Waters
(Nuclear Blast - 2007)

Quite heavy the Finnish sextet kicks off their latest album Silent Waters with Weaving The Incantation. The death metal growls add some heaviness while the clean vocals of Tomi Joutsen makes it more catchy. In a way they returned to their past... They started as a death metal band and developed to a more heavy melodic band through the years. On Silent Waters they partly go back in time - like on Weaving The Incantation where they combine melodic death metal with their sonic landscapes. With The Servant they stay on the chosen path, even if this is probably too heavy for some of their fans... But early in their career their sound was more unique - and these songs bring it back. The guitars of Esa Holopainen and Tomi Koivusaari create soundscapes - together with keyboarder Santeri Kallio -, but also add some heavy riffing. Personally I like the deep, dark voice of Tomi Joutsen. His clean vocals are emotional and powerful - if required - and he can also add some growls. The more emotional side of Joutsen is shown at the title track as well as Enigma - an acoustic tune with a folk vibe. At Silent Waters the keyboard is a bit more present and the guitars step back a bit, but still you get a short guitar solo part. The hook line is catchy and will haunt you for days! Great melodies everywhere! A bit symphonic it gets with I Of Crimson Blood. And the vocals are grand and elegant - even when he sings a bit deeper and more raspy.
A great album which reveals it's beauty every time you listen to. Almost impossible to pick a song, but to get an idea I would recommend to listen to Weaving The Incantation and Silent Waters.

Chapters

Chapters
(Relapse Rec. - 2003)

With Chapters the Finnish band ends a chapter in the career of Amorphis. So they took the chance to take a look back. This CD contains tracks from every release. From today they travel back in time to the early days. The songs show perfectly the way of the Finnish from a melodic death metal band to a band who play atmospheric dark metal. As a kind of bonus the band put the single version of Alone and the bonus track Too Much To See on the disc to represent their album Am Universe. With Northern Lights they release a track from the recording sessions of Tuonela. This compilation is a good chance to get an idea about Amorphis, an overview of their career. Fans of the early days might not be interested, coz the band changed musically, but for metal fans who discovered the band just recently have the chance to learn about the past of the band and find out which releases are interesting for them to get.
Another nice idea is the bonus DVD - the CD is sold for the normal CD price - which present 5 video clips. Every clip is from another album and leads you back in history. Only the debut album isn't represented. Especially the version of My Kantele is interesting, coz it's an acoustic version. Filmed very atmospheric. Btw, the DVD is 'Region 0 / PAL' and so can be played in every DVD player.
I think this is a great idea and gives the best of every release. Especially for fans of the last 2 albums it might be interesting to listen to old tunes without being forced to get the whole album. Perhaps one or the other find out that an old release is interesting as well. Beside that there is a biography of Christopher Dick of www.DigitalMetal.com who also chose the songs. Thanks to Relapse Records for this one!

Black Winter Day

Black Winter Day
(Nuclear Blast - 1993)

Another release which make me angry, not that I don't like Amorphis, but this release is just another try to get your money! On the disc are 3 previously unreleased tracks from the recording sessions of Tales From The Thousand Lakes and additionally Black Winter Day. Other bands release albums with more then 70 minutes of music. I think this 3 track last 10+ minutes and would have fit onto the Tales From The Thousand Lakes album... Anyway...
