Quite heavy the Finnish sextet kicks off their latest album Silent Waters with Weaving The Incantation. The death metal growls add some heaviness while the clean vocals of Tomi Joutsen makes it more catchy. In a way they returned to their past... They started as a death metal band and developed to a more heavy melodic band through the years. On Silent Waters they partly go back in time - like on Weaving The Incantation where they combine melodic death metal with their sonic landscapes. With The Servant they stay on the chosen path, even if this is probably too heavy for some of their fans... But early in their career their sound was more unique - and these songs bring it back. The guitars of Esa Holopainen and Tomi Koivusaari create soundscapes - together with keyboarder Santeri Kallio -, but also add some heavy riffing. Personally I like the deep, dark voice of Tomi Joutsen. His clean vocals are emotional and powerful - if required - and he can also add some growls. The more emotional side of Joutsen is shown at the title track as well as Enigma - an acoustic tune with a folk vibe. At Silent Waters the keyboard is a bit more present and the guitars step back a bit, but still you get a short guitar solo part. The hook line is catchy and will haunt you for days! Great melodies everywhere! A bit symphonic it gets with I Of Crimson Blood. And the vocals are grand and elegant - even when he sings a bit deeper and more raspy.
A great album which reveals it's beauty every time you listen to. Almost impossible to pick a song, but to get an idea I would recommend to listen to Weaving The Incantation and Silent Waters.
