To The Frontlines

To The Frontlines
(High Roller Records - 2012)

The new Zl album is here with solid but predictable metal. And by metal we are talking about 80's sound of heavy metal. Not a bad thing but Zl doesn't bring so much new ammunition to their guns, so the standard Zl metal is only progressing in a very light tempo. Mike Butcher and the guys are starting bombastic with Show No Mercy where the wonderful metal rhythm lift up the quality of the opening song to start out well. Smoldering Nights is all about real classic heavy metal where the guitar work makes the difference for the better. Another song that also deserves to be mentioned is Waste Of Time, a real fast fist fighting attitude heavy metal hard hitter that makes a decent last song of the album. This album can be marked as fully acceptable, but not so much more than that.

Out Of Time

Out Of Time
(High Roller Records - 2012)

Zl makes a re-release of their 2010 album Out Of Time to give the album another possibility on the market, and that could be a good thing since they are also making a brand new album To The Frontlines in 2012. So a lot to be happy about from Zl. The Americans are clearly inspired by 80's heavy metal sound, and especially Saxon has been a good source for inspiration, the aggressive guitar sound, classic hard rhythm gets Zl a fine base to operate from, and Executioner has all the elements of real classic heavy metal with tons of power in it. Backstreet Crawler is some of the hardest heavy metal they can provide, cream to the ears. Darkness On The Ice is also pure 80's metal with Saxon metal sound lurking as the backbone of the song. An album that brings the smiles on.
