Y&T - live in Bochum

Another Monday night and back to Bochum, this time to see Y&T playing at the Matrix. When Dirty Passion from Malmö entered the stage only a few dozen people were waiting in front of the stage, but singer Emil Ekbladh and his pals came to rock. The Swedish foursome offered some 80's hard rock with a dash sleaze and some heaviness. Most of the Y&T fans didn't know the band - like me -, but the guys did their best to entertain the people. It was their first time in Germany as Emil Ekbladh explained and he thanked the audience for treating Dirty Passion nicely. Partly Björn Wilander's bass was a bit too prominent, but Y&T isn't the kind of band who gives their support a bad sound and almost no lights. After the rocker Self-Destructive Emil Ekbladh announced that they will slow down a bit... And with Don't Say It's Over they presented a ballad. Most of their songs were rock tune with 80's-like choirs, heavy riffs and a catchy hook. Dirty Passion left a positive impression and I hope to hear more of these guys.
After a change over it was time for Y&T! From The Moon came out of the speakers and the band enter the stage to kick off with Open Fire. And right from the start there was the magic of Y&T moving the people. Even if only about 120 fans came to see the band, the atmosphere was incredible. From the first note the Y&T lovers sang along. I didn't expect Don't Wanna Lose You so early in the set, but well... After Hard Times a fan was shouting for Rock'n'Roll's Gonna Save The World which surprised mainman Dave Meniketti - and exactly that's what they delivered next, followed by Dirty Girl. During Mean Streak Phil Kennemore had some problems with his bass, but the band kept playing. "Man, I'm glad the bass is back!" Dave Meniketti stated. "Do you know what's coming?" Meniketti asked and played the first notes of Keep On Believing. When it was time for Black Tiger it was Mike Vanderhaule's turn to kick off. Black Tiger is definitely one of the highlights of every Y&T show! Before they could continue Mr. Meniketti had to tune his guitar which he commented "It's an old, old guitar. It needs some help... Have it since '68... I Believe In You!" I was happy that this time Midnight In Tokyo made it onto the set list, I always loved that one. "Anything you want to hear?" Mr. Y&T asked and some fans shouted "Break Out Tonight!" "That's a fu**ing honor. But I don't remember the lyrics now, you guys have to sing!" But after a few moments Dave Meniketti stopped and apologized that he can't do this one. I guess next time around they will be prepared for this one... They started playing My Way Or The Highway, but soon stopped again - again the lyrics were gone. When Dave Meniketti mentioned Barroom Boogie everybody expected this one to be next, but before they continued he got a beaker handed by their roadie... "Sorry, in Germany this is a must have, a shot of Jägermeister." After he drowned it they played Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark off Ten, one of my favorite albums and songs, even if it needed to grow on many fans when it came out. After their US hit single Summertime Girls it was time to introduce the band, but everybody in the house knew the guys on stage. It was obvious that they enjoyed playing, being on the road again. Looks Like Trouble... And then it was time for Phil Kennemore to take over the mic for Squeeze Me. Phil addressed the people with a friendly "Hey motherfuckers!" The answer to this... "Fu** you Phil!" Mr. K smiled and commented "You make me missing my wife. She always calls me 'Fu** you Phil'. 10 days from home now and you make me miss her!" Kennemore's probably not the best singer, but a good entertainer and so Squeeze Me was a lot of fun. And with Forever they finished their set. Meniketti's emotional vocals - and his guitar play - make songs like this special. The Californian's played more then 2 hours and returned for another song - Rescue Me! Even with 2:15 hrs. stage time it seemed to be over way to early. Some songs were missed by one or the other - like Hurricane, Barroom Boogie, Come In From The Rain, Beautiful Dreamer or Winds Of Change... Again Y&T delivered a great show which is definitely in my top 5 concerts of the year - as always. These guys won't disappoint their fans! They will be back in 2010! And I guess everybody who saw them rock Europe on this run will show up next time... And hopefully bring some friends to party!

Y & T - 8th Oct. 2006 - Zoetermeer (NL), de Boerderij

A few weeks ago I heard that Y & T will come over to Europe again - and again there was no show scheduled for Germany -, but luckily for the Netherlands. Next there was the news that they will record a DVD at the Zoetermeer show and so we decided to go there. When we arrived the support band SQY Rocking Team were already on stage. In April 2004 I saw them opening for Y & T in Helmond and they were pretty good, but I still haven't heard any album of them, so I can't tell much about them. Only that it seems they changed and that I liked them better in 2004... Beside that it was time to have a coffee and some snack before the show.    ;)
After a break it was time to welcome Y & T! The band of mainman Dave Meniketti started off with Open Fire. They rocked the house from the first moment and the set list included all their classics - and even songs from Ten were played. Its amazing how fresh they sound after more then 30 years on stage, even if drummer Leonard Haze left and so from the original line-up only Dave Meniketti and bassist Phil Kennemore are left over. Mike Vanderhule replaced Haze and guitarist John Nymann is with the guys for a few years already. The band sounded tight and it was obvious how much they enjoyed playing. They were joking and laughing, but that had no effect on their playing.
First highlight of the night was Don't Stop Running and the next one was a surprise - Dirty Girl! Between the songs Meniketti talked with the audience and most of the fans welcomed it when he announced some songs from Ten - Surrender and Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark. In my opinion the album was underrated and it seems that after a few years passed the fans really love it. Mainly they played songs from their 80's releases - and that's what the fans wanted to hear. With Lonely Side Of Town they offered a track most wouldn't have expected. With the first notes of Ballroom Boogie the fans went crazy! Loudly the fans sung along and welcomed the jammed part of Ballroom Boogie. With the next song the band slowed down a bit and presented from Black Tiger the classic Wind Of Change. This song has a special magic... It gave me goose bumps. After Eyes Of A Stranger it was time for John Nymann to show his skills and so a short guitar solo lead into their most commercial one - Summertime Girls. Hurricane came over the crowd and a short solo of Mr. Meniketti they started Rescue Me. After these Earthshaker tracks Dave Meniketti left the stage for a moment - which seemed to puzzle the other guys. They jammed a bit and soon Dave was back in a new shirt and refreshed as he stated. A few solo licks, then the riffing lead into I Cry For You and a bit more jamming. Time for an extended solo of master Meniketti - as lead singer and lead guitarist he can't show all his talent during the songs, but it ain't a secret that the man is more then just a decent guitarist. The next song he introduced with some words... That he has a dream and that dream is about rock ruling the world, not politicians.... Rock'N'RollGonna Save The World! Then he asked the promoters here to believe in them and book them for more shows and the crowd got loud. The fans want to see Y & T live - still! And I Believe In You was their statement. Last, but not least - Forever! And it seems that this is the credo of the band, coz they are still around - and we all hope they will stay around much longer! But tonight's show was over... But the fans wanted more and so the foursome came back on stage for Hang Them High and Black Tiger.
They played a long set, but still fans wanted more and so there is some hope they will return and play songs like Don't Wanna Lose You, Beautiful Dreamer, Midnight In Tokyo and She's Gone... to name just a few. But at least we'll get a DVD with their classics, even if not all essential songs been played.... But we should all thank the guys for this show and that they recorded this DVD here in Europe - where most promoters seems to think that there is no audience for this band... this music. Wake up! There are fans and they want more!

Y & T and Sequoyah
- April, 18th 2004 - Helmond (NL), Plato -

When I heard that Y & T should play in the Netherlands, I checked their website immediately. I listened to their albums since the early 80's and so them as support of AC/DC in 1982. They just returned last summer for a few festivals, but I haven't had the chance to see them, so I was hot to see them this time around. Luckily they played at the Plato in Helmond which isn't that far from my hometown. I was kind of nervous to see them, for me a special event. When we arrived at the venue some fans were already queuing at the front door.
About 30 minutes after doors open the support act - the Dutch Sequoyah - entered the stage. To be honest I never heard of the band before, but a flyer told me that they are around for more then 10 years. The band of guitarist and singer Harald van Kruysdijk opened their set with Pascadero. The venue was already filled with rock fans and the biker rock of Sequoyah was welcomed by the rock fans. I can't tell much about the songs, coz I heard them for the first time, but it was fun. I'll check them out later. The quartet finished their 45 minute long set with a cover version of Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song.
Right now the venue was packed - even if 30,- € is not quite cheap - , people came from Germany, France and the BeNeLux to see these Americans. The band of lead guitarist and singer Dave Meniketti kicked off their set with Meanstreak. It was a travel back in time for most of the rock fans, but there were fans from about 13 years up to 60 year old rockers. Also all kinds of metal and rock fans came, I saw shirts from bands like AC/DC, Krokus, Evergrey, Savatage, Nevermore, Satyricon, Bathory and Venom! The band goes straight through the first songs. After Don't Stop Running Meniketti introduced the band and apologized that guitarist Joey Alves couldn't come over and asked the fans to welcome instead John Nymann. The band didn't changed much - okay, they looked older - and that's it. Dave Meniketti is still joined by bassist Phil Kennemore and drummer Leonard Haze. During the 'best-of' set the band also played some stuff from the new release Unearthed Vol. 1, a collection of 17 songs from the recording sessions of Black Tiger, Contagious and Ten. One of this songs was which is I Make Believe, an old track which never made it onto an album as well as Wild If I Wanna. A real party started with Barroom Boogie from the Black Tiger album. Followed by their hit single Summertime Girls. Time to slow down a little with I'll Cry. Giving the band and the fans a little break. With a track from Down For The Count - Anything For Money - they continued. Followed by one of my favorite tracks - Winds Of Change! Wow! Simply amazing what this guys do on stage. Not the stage acting, which is limited, but the magic they and their songs create. It seems that almost everybody is singing along. Next a little more straight forward with Go For The Throat and Black Tiger. To end the set they chose I Believe In You. The fans wanted more and the band didn't let them wait for too long. Back for Rescue Me and Forever. During Forever it seemed that everybody was singing along and the intensity gave me goosebumps. For the band it was amazing to see so many fans who are into their music so many years after the release of their albums. Dave Meniketti expressed the feeling the band had, they were overwhelmed by the warm welcome of the fans and promised to come back soon. And I hope - as everybody else, I guess - that they come back soon and not just for the Arrow Rock Festival and for Sweden Rock Festival!
I have to confess that I usually not one to support high priced tickets, but this was worth spending 30,- €. Amazing show. If you are into rock / hard rock, then go to see them when they are playing in your area. You won't regret it!
