State Of The Art

State Of The Art
(Frontiers Records - 2011)

Johannes Stole and Daniel Palmqvist met at Music Institute in L.A. and this is their first album as XorigiN. Back in L.A. they had a band called Orange Crush, then went back to their home countries and worked on several projects. Now they are back together with the aim to play modern sounding AOR / arena rock.

They kick off with Can't Keep Running, a keyboard-laden rock tune with harmony vocals. Reminds me a bit of bands like Foreigner, Survivor, Journey and even Giant, but with a modern touch - and a slight pop appeal. Crying For You it a balladesque track which is more pop-based... but also shows some similarities to Stage Dolls and other Scandinavian melodic rock bands. Daniel Palmqvist's guitar adds some Westcoast sounds to it. A bit too polished for me, but well... At Too Late you'll soon sing along, a song which I can easily imagine to be played at classic rock radio... A heavy rocker with keyboards is Gina, in the late 80's this would have been on played at MTV next to Steelheart, Mitch Malloy, Trouble Tribe and Valentine - among others! So, if you enjoyed that sound, you will enjoy XorigiN, perhaps not from start to finish, but a good part of it.

Fans of Survivor, Foreigner and AOR / Westcoast rock sounds should check out State Of The Art. I recommend to listen to Gina, Too Late, This Is It and Said And Done.

Swedish guitarist Daniel Palmqvist (ex-Murder Of My Sweet) and Norwegian vocalist Johannes Stole has cooperated on this pop rock project that have resulted in 11 pop songs that could most properly get some airtime on the radio and their musical style is inspired by artist like E.L.O. and Toto, so now you got the picture of what XorgiN are doing. The songs are soft pop rock, but without own personality and don't have so much to say. Furthermore it doesn't exactly help to remember the songs, too much alike as they do on this album. Only 4 from me.
