Last year Kip Winger released an album with Blackwood Creek and a Winger album called Karma. The bassist and his mates hit the road soon after the release and already toured Europe, but now they are back to play some more shows in Europe, to hit other areas. And this time they had Bochum's Matrix on their schedule.
At the German shows the rock band Five And The Red One where opening. Some might remember them from the Whitesnake / Alice Cooper tour in November 2008, but with their modern stadium rock they make it easy for the crowd to have a good time. Singer David Spiegler & co. are still promoting their second album Mother Bomb Phoenix which was released late 2008. The guys presented some rockers and some more balladesque tunes incl. the single Road To Nowhere. Obviously some fans of the guys from Ulm attended the show, but the majority didn't know them. David Spiegler partly reminded me a bit of Michael Voss (Mad Max, Casanova, etc)... The youngsters played tight, but somehow they couldn't spark the interest. And so quite a few stayed close the bar, having a drink and waiting for the main act.
After a break it was time for Winger! The foursome kicked off with Pull Me Under off their latest album Karma. The heavy, riff-based rocker is the perfect opener and right from the start Kip Winger and his band showed that they still know how to rock! The warm voice of Kip and the catchy hook line immediately hooked up the fans. The ones in the first row started singing along. With Blind Revolution Mad they traveled back in time a bit and offered a song from Pull, their 1993 album. Next stop In The Heart Of The Young and Easy Come Easy Go. Drummer Rod Morgenstein giving the beat which accompanied the bass and guitar riffs... Stone Cold Killer. The heavy tunes from Karma fit well to older ones, mainly because Kip Winger and his partner in crime Reb Beach always focus on catchy melodies, but also give everybody enough space to shine. Without a break they presented the first 4 tracks, then Kip Winger announced a song of In The Heart Of The Young while sitting down behind the keyboard for Rainbow In The Rose. Back on bass it was time for Deal With The Devil, obviously the fans appreciated the old ones and the new tunes equally - at least by judging the reactions of the fans in the first rows... Later on Kip Winger introduced guitarist John Roth: "John Roth is from Memphis, Tennessee and John Roth is a chicken picking motherfucker!". Time for Roth to show his skills while Kip and Reb were joking around and delivering the playground for Roth's solo. "John is the new lead guitarist playing in Giant!" Kip Winger informed the people. "We do now a song of Winger IV. My deutsch is scheiße!" He added smiling. After a long guitar solo of Reb Beach they headed into You Are The Saint, I Am The Sinner. Then the men on the strings left the stage and Rod Morgenstein got his time for a solo. When the guys returned Kip Winger again sat down behind the keyboard and announced a song from their first records - Headed For A Heartbreak. Followed by their single hits Can't Get Enough and Seventeen. And the band left the stage. The fans wanted some more and after a few minutes they returned for another single hit - Miles Away. And with Madalaine they played one more tune from their self-titled debut.
Too soon it was over, the guys seemed to have fun on stage and so I don't really understand why they didn't play a bit longer... The band has enough songs to choose from. It wasn't even 11PM! And I bet the fans would have appreciate 2-3 more songs... Anyway, Winger delivered a tight performance and a kind of best-of set, so their fans will be there next time around.
