Remedios para el alma

Remedios para el alma
(Bakita Rec. - 2001)

Due to a friend I got the album Remedios para el alma from the Guatemalan rock band Viernes Verde. The band started in the early 90's and is named after a computer virus of 1993, the same year the band was founded.
The opener Como me arrastro starts with some strange noises and spoken words, but then becomes a beautiful, balladesque rock tune. The four reduce their music to the essential and so the emotional voice of Omar Méndez sticks out. But they can rock, as they show later in the song when they add some heavy riffs and a cool guitar solo. With acoustic guitars starts Estadio which is partly a dreamy song, but get's a bit harder with heavy riffs in the 2nd half of the song. With the 3rd song - Sed - they push a bit and present heavy rock with Spanish lyrics and almost metal-like riffs. At Anda Solo the guys remind me of Nickelback... With Invisible they get real heavy! A heavy rocker.
The band from Guatemala is based in the college rock / AOR genre. As I don't understand the lyrics, I can't tell anything about this, but its fun to listen. Sure, they don't have big hit on this album, but I heard worse albums and this one is a grower!
