Salute to the Iron Emperors

Salute To The Iron Emperors
(Ván Records - 2010)

The German black metal scene is one of the strongest around at the moment with excellent bands such as Negator, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult and Nargaroth reminding their Norwegian counterparts just how this genre is supposed to sound. With that in mind I was looking forward to hearing Truppensturm's new album after hearing that they were another shining light in this darkest of genres.
Well, I'm afraid I was misled. The production on this album is awful. I'm fairly certain it was recorded underwater to be honest. I'm sure it would have been a fairly enjoyable album if you could hear it. Unfortunately all you can really hear is a soft tap-tap-tapping bass drum, guitars that could quite honestly just be playing the same thing over and over again and some kind of unintelligible vocals. All of the songs - I assume there were some written – blend into one endless barrage of noise. I like raw black metal but purposefully piss-poor production really annoys me.
The few times the sound becomes clear, mostly during solos, the talent of Truppensturm is hinted at. Its a shame as I bet this band are insane live, but they seem intent on trying to sound 'necro' (or whatever) than on doing their own music justice. Couldn't wait for this to finish.

When I played the new Truppensturm album for the first time, I thought my speakers broke down. A murderous, mangy, muddy sound came over me which can hardly be topped in darkness and ugliness. Truppensturm are a synonym for raw, chaotic, satanic old school black / death metal - with a bit thrash embedded. Without mercy and with an uncompromisingly bass-laden sound they remember one of Sodom's In The Sign Of Evil, Venom's Welcome To Hell, Onslaught's Power From Hell and the early works of Incantation. So everybody should be aware that this means blunt and brutal sounds without any melodies. Even the guitars sound rumbling and thunderous while the drums hammer monotonously, sometimes even slowly. The singer sounds like he's belch from deep down a sewer - and all 12 songs sound alike. This is far from easy listening, but that's exactly what Truppensturm want to achieve. Nothing for the masses, but only for die-hard extreme old school fans! Even if this sounds like scorcher, but I love the above mentioned bands and the forecited albums, so you should know what I think about Truppensturm! Anyway, I recommend to check out several songs before you buy the album!
