Roadmap Of Pain

Roadmap Of Pain
(Firebox Rec. - 2003)

Melodic death metal from Finland, nothing new you might think, but this band was initially founded in 1998 by Jaakko Heinonen and Lauri Pikka to play all machines extreme music as they describe it. Later their sound got more metal and the other members joined the duo. But these days the sound is more then just melodic death metal, it has gothic elements, dark metal sounds which is perfectly presented by the album opener I Am God. On the first track you can hear some speeches of Tapio Wilska (Finntroll). Even if other songs are heavy and more what you expect from melodic death metal. But don't expect Children Of Bodom or In Flames copycats. On Struggling From Chokehold electronic elements are combined with up-tempo melodic death metal. The machine sounds can just be found here and there. More in the background, partly a detail which you probably won't recognize when the CD spins first. Some are more mid-tempo and then there is Production Peak which is more then 7 min. long. This track has more electronic / industrial elements, but is heavy and really rocks, even if it's partly reduced to just guitars, slow and mellow. A really interesting track. Totally different is Left Hand Of The Evil, a straight forward melodic death metal track with some industrial sound pieces. Disguise remind me a little of Amorphis.... With additional electronic sound pieces.
The Finnish brothers offer an interesting mixture and a variety of tunes. Nothing for purists! But if you are open-minded, then you should give it a try. I can recommend: Disguise, I Am God and Production Peak.
