The Wheel

The Wheel
(Cargo Records - 2011)

The band was founded in 2007 by singer / guitarist Ørjan Kvalvik - as far as I know - to play 'real' music with great vocals and a heavy groove. Anyway, I wonder how someone these days can name his band The Wheel, coz a quick internet check would reveal that you get tons of hits and so it would be difficult to find out anything about the band.

The Norwegians kick off with Stand Up, a heavy rock with lots of 70's elements and some 80's sounds woven into another. The sound is warm and sounds almost like old analog recordings... The vocals partly sound like Danny Vaughn (Tyketto)... The opening of Into The Water gives me another Tyketto moment, but as soon as the guitar sets in it gets more 70's heavy rock... Dash of Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen at many tunes. At Love you get a more Led Zep and bluesy rock. And so they continue, you will always find some references at their songs, but the songs sound fresh and it's fun listening. So soon you will forget about the names popping up in your head and just enjoy the music. Sparks is a ballad which kicks odd with acoustic guitar, but then go full force becoming a power ballad. A boogie-based heavy rocker is Lost Souls, a bit early Whitesnake and a das Van Halen you get.

I won't complain, even if they won't win a prize for originality... I guess everybody who loves some good 70's heavy rock / 80's hard rock will have a good time listening to The Wheel. Just wish they would have chosen a different name, coz in days of the internet and social media people get a bit lazy and want to find things immediately, if they google it.
