Gothic Kabbalah

Gothic Kabbalah
(Nuclear Blast - 2007)

From the first spin it becomes obvious that Therion is developing and did the next step with Gothic Kabbalah. The song Der Mitternachtslöwe starts off quite dark and leads into the latest opus of Therion. You feel like being transfered to the time of Gothic, but that could have been expected as the album is called Gothic Kabbalah. Lyrically the album is about Johannes Bureus who spend his time researching the old mystic tradition of the Jews - the kabbalah.
The conceptual album offers a large variety of songs which are all transport the story very well. A masterpiece of orchestration symphonic metal and great arrangements with a variety of melodies and vocal lines like in Son Of The Stabes Of Time and Wisdom And The Cage.
The band got a helping hand from others and so guests like Mats Levén (At Vance, ex-Yngwie Malmsteen) and Snowy Shaw (ex-Dream Evil, ex-Mercyful Fate) who added some vocal parts.
The band shows their skills - especially guitarist Kristin Niemann shows his talent - and that they are ready for the metal masses.
Everybody who missed them on their world tour, should check for festivals and should try to catch them at some festival.
A great piece of work and a step forward for the Swedish. Get your copy of Gothic Kabbalah which is in the stores right now!

Deggial

Deggial
(Nuclear Blast - 2000)

The latest opus of Therion is out, it's called Deggial and offers 11 tracks. The opening track shows that the Swedish continue the way which they at least did on Vovin. This time they didn't worked with computers, they used 'real' classical instruments for the recordings.
So at all 27 musicians entered the legendary Woodhouse Studios in Hagen to give the album the right sound. A lot of bands jumped on the bandwagon and released some 'Metal meets Classic' album and were successful with it, but Therion did this combination years ago. The experienced quartet was able to do a very mature album of modern metal.
In comparison to their last release this one has more power as if they want to push it to the limits.... The songs have a lot of power and didn't lack melodic parts. They arranged beautiful choirs with screaming guitars, a string section with pounding drums and that's what Therion is in the year 2000.
Personally I liked Vovin very much and so their latest output is a little too raw for me, but it still is a great release!
Let's wait until they hit the road....

Deggial

Deggial
(Nuclear Blast - 2000)

The band of mainman Christofer Johnsson released Deggial which follows the alley they chose with Vovin. If you know just their lates releases, you won't believe that they been a death metal act in the beginning. The songs are very symphonic and the choires gives them a special mood. Christofer Johnsson seems to get more and more into the writing and arranging of classic / rock compositions and he gets better and better! Another positiv thing is in my opinion that Christofer prefer to work with an orchestra and a choir and don't use 'artifical' sounds! The album was recorded at the Woodhouse and so Therion got Waldemar Sorychta and Hansi Kürsch. If you liked their last releases, you like Deggial! My favourite tracks are Enter Vril-Ya and Emerald Crown.

Theli

Theli
(Nuclear Blast - 1996)

Beside Gorefest's Soul Survivor and Iced Earth's The Dark Saga is the new album of Therion - which is called Theli - one of the best releases in 1996!
That the Swedish band love eccentric song structures is known since they released their first album. The essence of the different elements on this album is better then everything they did before! Death metal fragments combined with gothic elements and symphonic splatter sounds.... Opera vocals combined with sounds of the end of the world.... Amazing! Genius!
Check this album out! It's a small revolution in a time of trends in the metal age.

Lepaca Kliffoth

Lepaca Kliffoth
(Nuclear Blast - 1995)

To review the mini album The Beauty In Black ain't necessary, coz the songs of this mini album are also at the full-length album Lepaca Kliffoth. But now let's talk about the new album! Okay, first I should mention that this album hasn't much in common with death metal. Therion made the songs even better by adding guest vocalist Claudia Maria Mohri (a soprano) who is known for her guest appearance on albums of Celtic Frost. The songs like the opener The Wings Of The Hydra and Black show a kind of arrogant magnificence and pure heaviness. Another highlight is the Celtic Frost cover Sorrow Of The Moon which is just great. Great album!
