The Thousandfold Epicentre

The Thousandfold Epicentre
(Ván Records - 2011)

The Devil's Blood is dividing the rock fans, some thing they are the next big thing while others find them extremely boring. The occult rock of SL and F isn't presenting anything new, but they are heart and soul and that's make their songs special.

The slowly lead you into The Thousandfold Epicentre with Unending Singularity, the 2+ minute long track is more an intro for the album, it builds up a special atmosphere and then they head into On The Wings Of Gloria. And with On The Wings Of Gloria they will enchant their followers. The song offers complex elements while the riffing is quite repetitive and on top of it F's expressive vocals. The 60's / 70's occult rock might not please everybody, but it's authentic. This time they enrich their sound with new elements - violins, organ, brass which support the atmospheric vocals and melodic guitars. The song Within The Charnel House Of Love make me think of a dark version of the music of Hair... It's probably the vocal style or the psychedelic sounds, but it doesn't matter, coz I simply enjoy the song. She is a very catchy one which features F's vocals, this time with female backing vocals. The title track The Thousandfold Epicentre is offering different sounds, but again SL's guitar and / or F's vocals will enchant you. They speed up for Fire Burning, a real rocker. The passage with vocals and piano at Everlasting Saturnalia is beautiful, then simply beautiful guitar melody replaces the piano and the vocals, but soon they are back. Towards the end the album it seems that the songs are more alike. Especially Feverdance seems to get lengthy, but right at the moment you consider to push the stop button the song changes, grabbing your attention. It's building up in a hypnotic way and culminates into a noisy guitar part. I culminates and get peppered up with some new sound elements. That's unexpected and surprising. And at the end of the song, the album you will appreciate it.

Well done! Definitely a step forward for The Devil's Blood, but still it will divide the rock fans. If you loved their previous releases, then this will be a real treat for you!

The Time Of No Time Evermore

The Time Of No Time Evermore
(Ván Records - 2009)

The Dutch duo The Devil's Blood has already built up a following in the underground scene and with their full-length debut The Time Of No Time Evermore they are now stepping into the spotlight.
Musically the duo present psychedelic rock with influences ranging from the 60's to the 80's incl. NWoBHM elements. But what make them differ is their love for the occult. Song writer and lyricist SL is stating that he is ideological close to the believes of Dissection and Watain. Jon Nödtveidt (Dissection) who is a member of The Temple Of The Black Light - formerly known as Misanthropic Luciferian Order -, but SL and his sister F. aren't members.
The intro The Time Of No Time leads slowly into the album with guitar, first with acoustic guitar, then bluesy. When they head into Evermore the song seems to explode and becomes an up-tempo psychedelic rocker which shows the 60's influences. It's F.'s dark voice and expressiveness which ennobles the song! I'll Be Your Ghost was the first single, an appetizer for this album. A mid-paced rocker is The Yonder Beckons which also offers a slow passage where they reduce the sound and only use guitar and vocals. Into this slow passage the drums hit and are like a wake-up call. Great guitar solo. One of the highlights is House Of 10,000 Voices, an almost hypnotic drum beat hooks you up, more psychedelic elements show up and F. uses a higher pitch. Almost happy starts Queen Of My Burning Heart, a guitar-driven tune which's atmosphere partly reminds me of Aquarius... even if it's heavy rocker. And then SL let the guitar sing again; his guitar is building a counter part to F.'s voice. The closer The Anti-Kosmik Magick is more then 11 minutes long and so gives them a lot space to show their vision. The opening riff is influenced by Thin Lizzy and can be found again later in the song, but again it's F.'s voice which enchants you.
A modern psychedelic album which many references to the 60's rock, but at the same time authentic and original. The occult side of The Devil's Blood make them stick out, too. The Dutch duo shows that occultism not only shows in black metal and doom. With The Time Of No Time Evermore they introduce psychedelic rock to a new generation! Well done!

I'll Be Your Ghost

I'll Be Your Ghost
(Ván Records - 2009)

The Devil's Blood is a Dutch duo which started this band project in late 2007. The EP Come, Reap was released last year and now the single I'll Be Your Ghost is released as an appetizer for the coming album. The Time Of No Time Evermore shall be in the stores in September, 11th 2009. Beside I'll Be Your Ghost you get a 12 minutes long version of Voodoo Dust, but it's a more raw version then the original on from Come, Reap.
Selim Lemouchi is writing the music and lyrics which are sung by his sister Farida. I'll Be Your Ghost shows that their roots are the psychedelic rock of the 60's and some 70's hard rock elements. And they are attracted of the occult side of rock which is also shown in the lyrics.
Voodoo Dust is here presented in a studio live recording which is less perfect, but more emotional. And in the 60's and 70's rock was more emotional and less perfect. It was about the spirit of the music and that's what they show here. Listen to their music on the bands MySpace profile to get an idea of The Devil's Blood!
