Heresy And Creed

Heresy And Creed
(Frontiers Records - 2012)

Singer Gary Hughes and Ten are back! The new album is called Heresy And Creed, it starts with the intro The Gates Of Jerusalem. The intro and the following Arabian Knights have an Oriental touch, but Arabian Knights also offers keyboard sounds which aren't Oriental-like. It's mainly the guitar which gives this impression, but they also give the song a metal-ish edge. Gunrunning has metallic edge as well, but is totally different. More symphonic and hard rock-ish at times. It's no news that Gary Hughes knows how to write catchy vocal lines. In a way The Lights Go Down is a typical Ten tune, and so it sounds very familiar - but the lead guitar part is great. The slower Raven's Eye got a dash of folk and so differs from the first tunes, but fit to Ten and adds some variety to Heresy And Creed. At other songs they are heading into melodic metal, but in a way that hard rock lovers will easily follow them. With The Last Time Mr. Hughes added a piano ballad, once again he shows that he can sing any ballad easily without making it sound cheesy.

Songs like Insatiable should please hard rockers and melodic metalheads, even if metal fans might find it a bit soft, but give it a few spins and listen to the guitars! Only the soft rocker The Riddle which is the closer isn't keeping the level - at least for me. But well, it's a great album which won't disappoint fans of Gary Hughes and Ten!

Stormwarning

Stormwarning
(Frontiers - 2011)

The last Ten album was The Twilight Chronicles in 2006, now Gary Hughes is back with a new line-up. He hooked up bassist Mark Sumner and guitarist Neil Fraser which are teaming up with guitarist John Halliwell and keyboarder Paul Hodson. For the recordings he hired Fates Warning drummer Mark Zonder. He brought back Luis Royo to do the artwork while he put the production and mix in the hands of Dennis Ward.

They kick off with Endless Symphony, a symphonic tune. The instrumental opening passage is quite long, but then they head into a heavy, riff-based part. I think it would have done the tune good to cut it short - at least a bit. Acoustic guitar leads you into Centre Of My Universe, but soon the song becomes heavier and more guitar-driven. Great lead guitar play! Gary Hughes' vocals demand your attention the moment he joins in, but Neil Fraser's bluesy guitar leads speak up again and seem to answer Hughes. The opening passage of Kingdom Come sounds familiar... And again it's the lead guitar which ennobles the songs - and of course Gary Hughes vocals. The band delivers a solid performances, but that's no surprise. With Book Of Secrets the atmosphere changes, it isn't a heavier tune, but has a dark edge while the title track Stormwarning is a quite typical Ten tune. The powerful balladesque Love Song is another quite typical tune, somehow it seems that Ten didn't want to risk anything and stayed on safe ground. And towards the end this impression gets stronger.

Resume: What you see is what you get! Stormwarning is offering music on a high level, but there aren't any surprises. Fans will dig the album, but if they can make new ones, I'm not sure....

The Twilight Chronicles

The Twilight Chronicles
(Frontiers - 2006)

The British hard rockers are around for many years and they last studio album Return To Evermore disappointed some fans. Now 2 years later they are back with The Twilight Chronicles. Opening the album with a bombstic intro called The Prologue which after about 3 minutes leads into Rome. Who expects another bombastic song will be surprised by the heavy guitar riffing. Rome is a heavy melodic rocker which shines through the voice of Gary Hughes. A catchy tune which gives a good impression about Ten 2006, even if it's pretty long with more then 12 minutes!

Some happy chanting leads into The Chronicles. A rock song with a positive vibe. A real earcatcher, but unfortunately partly the band is too much in the back, so that the vocals are too dominant. The arrangement is great, only the mixing takes a bit off the positive impression. An epic ballad is The Elysian Fields which raises pictures when you listen with closed eyes. A kind of soundtrack to an unknown film. Enchanting! In a way the following Hallowed Ground picks up the main theme of The Elysian Fields, but instead of continuing creating soundscapes they guitars take over and it became a real heavy rocker. Interesting idea, the picked up theme builds a bridge between the 2 songs which are so different - and it works well. The drum beat of Oblivion and also some guitar riffing make me think of Styx... But only for about 30 seconds, afterwards it's hard rock with a touch too much of pop. Too sweet for metal fans, I guess.... Even if the following The Masquerade has more keyboards it's more heavy and rocking. A bit more straight forward then the previous track and so I'm wondering, why they have put Oblivion onto the disk. The Masquerade would have done. The tune Born To The Grave remind me of some song from Gary Hughes self-titled solo album released in the early 90's. I can't really say why, coz unfortunately I lost that album in a fire and couldn't replace it yet. Last, but not least When The Night Is Done which is also splitted into 2 parts. A slow, emotional tune - which is perfect to let the album fade out.

For true rockers the low will be the ballad This Heart Goes On, but it ain't a bad tune. Even if it seems to be made for rock radio. But at all his previous works Gary Hughes presented this kind of ballads, so I guess it's in his blood. But there must be a reason for the skip forward button, right? Or just let it run and perhaps you'll like it one day.... As the running time is about 73 minutes they probably should have considered to take a song or two off and make this album a real highlight... Anyway, this album is above the average and worth spending time to listen to it.

Fans of Ten or Magnum will buy this anyway and they won't be disappointed. Other should listen in to The Chronicles, The Elysian Fields, Hallowed Ground and Tourniquet.

Far Beyond The World

Far Beyond The World
(Frontiers - 2001)

The 6th studio album of Gary Hughes & Ten proofs that they are today's kings of British hard rock. Another masterpiece and again everything is written by Mr. Hughes himself. Never change a winning team is a common saying and that's what they did, only the mix was in other hands. A good choice to let the mix be done by Tommy Newton, coz this Ten album has a powerful and more crystalline sound.
Rocking tracks like Strange Land and Glimmer Of Evil are there as well as ballads like What About Me? and the epic Outlawed & Notorious which is a sing-along one.

A must for hard rock fans!
