Francesco - December 5th 2011 (by email)

Italy have so many bands, rock and metal, Screaming Shadows are a little different, one main singers and two guest vocalists. How this is working out, how they feel about their new album and what their future plans progresses. These issues will be cleared out by Francesco, the leader of Screaming Shadows.

Please tell us about the beginning of the band? And why did you choose the name Screaming Shadows?

Everything began in 1998, in the city of Sassari (North Sardinia). I'm the founder of the band and the original band's mates are me and the bassist Antonio Doro. There's not a particular reason for the Screaming Shadows name's choice, a friend of mine proposed me the name and we liked it! From 1998 to 2001 the band's name was different, we changed in 2001, but the music genre and the band's attitude was always the same.

Can you tell us about how it is with different singers in the band at the same time, guest performers and ordinary members of the band. Why do use so many guests?

Is not a problem work with so many singers and guest musicians, because I'm the only composer of the band and I write words and vocal melodies. We decided to have one drummer and a main singer (Mattia Stancioiu and Gianluigi Girardi), and work also with friends like Daniele Ledda and Alessandro Marras (ex-band mates) and Alessandro Del Vecchio (my Italian favorite singer).

When did you start writing songs for your album Night Keeper?

Me and bassist Antonio Doro started to work on the album after the New Era Of Shadows come out in 2009. I've started to compose some tracks also before the previous album. We recorded a demo with all the songs of N.K. to work on the arrangements, lyrics, guitar solos and vocal melodies. When I've contacted Mattia and Gianluigi, I've sent them that demo, to have a listen of our music and album's music genre. We are very proud to have worked with this guys, Mattia is my Italian favorite metal drummer and Gianluigi have a beautiful voice, it was great to work with them!

Do you write songs as a band? Or is there a main songwriter?

I've got a little recording studio where I can work to all my music, writing lyrics, arrangements and drums programming. When I compose a song, I compose every instruments parts.

What inspires you to write music/lyrics?

On our website www.screamingshadows.com is available a listening guide where I explain the visions and inspirations that have brought me to write the words, inside the CDs booklet there are all the songs' words. I want to send a very positive message to the people who listen our music, there are rebirth / reaction's words like Who Dares Wins or Free Again, metal lyrics like Night Keeper or fantasy like Holy Knights or Lord Of The Sea.

By the way: what bands / artists made you start playing? And which bands / artists are you listening to these days?

I've started to listen metal music when I was 8 and my favorite band of all time are Iron Maiden. Then I've discovered a lot of great bands that influence me like Manowar, Judas Priest, Yngwie Malmsteen and after progressive metal bands like Queensrÿche or Symphony X.

How long did the recordings take? Where did you record Night Keeper? Who produced the album?

The only recordings sessions from July to October 2010, around 4 months. The album's producers are Mattia Stancioiu and me.

Who did the artwork? And how is it tied to the album title?

The cover was done by Andrea Bovara based on my concept. Inside the booklet we decided to use graphic works instead of the band's mates single pics. On our web site are available (on the band section) the explanations of the symbolic meanings. They contains a different color, flower, Sardinian traditional mask and nature symbol (water, fire, ground, air), different for every band's mate. The entire graphic work was done by Daniele Pisano. Inside the CD booklet you can find all the credits and site links.

Which songs do you think represent Night Keeper best? And why?

It's a very hard question! Is like ask to a father what's his favorite son...
In our last album there are short songs with strong melodies easy to remind and also long songs with a lot of music and different melodies. I love the entire album, but I prefer the long songs, the ones that you need more time to discover. We wanted an album with something new to discover in every single listen.

Will you do a video? Which songs would you like to visualize?

We did the video clip of the Night Keeper song to promote the album on internet, you can watch it on our YouTube channel or in our website.

I guess you already got some feedback. Are you satisfied so far?

We are very proud about the positive feedback we are receiving and also about the work that our new label Jolly Roger Records is doing. We are very satisfied about the album, when the others appreciate your work is fantastic! We're receiving positive reviews all around the world and new fans write to us every day. Everybody can buy the album on our website www.screamingshadows.com, we ship worldwide!

What about playing live? Anything on the way?

We are working hard to play live on 2012, but nothing scheduled till now. If promoters or music venues's owners want to arrange a gig with Screaming Shadows, they can write to our management from our website.

Do you plan to record some live footage - not talking about Pro Shots - for YouTube or similar platforms?

Yeah of course! We want to record all the next live shows and upload them in our YouTube channel, we really like the relationship with our fans. We miss so hard the stage and we are looking forward to come back to play live.

Talking about the internet... Social network is both a blessing and a curse. What's your opinion about it?

We use the social network and internet to promote our music and to keep us in contact with our fan base, internet is a blessing! That kind of things were impossible when we've started in 98, now is easier.

What's next on your schedule? Anything you want to add?

Thank you so much for the interview! visit our website for the upcoming news!
When you hear the Screams….. the Shadows rule!!!
