Sons Of Seasons - live in Kerkrade

Almost a year ago I saw Sons Of Seasons for the first time, since the show in Dortmund they play quite a few shows. So I expected them to offer a tight set. It was the first time for me at The Rock Temple in Kerkrade, a metal bar with a small stage. Not far from Aachen some German fans came over at this Friday night.
Unfortunately only a few fans showed up, but even before Sons Of Seasons kicked off, the metal fans had fun with a great mix of classic songs. Finally it was time for the fivesome to enter the stage. The intro started and they headed into their set with the title track of their debut album Gods Of Vermin. The stage was big enough for them to move, but partly it was a bit too dark... Anyway, the sound was great and that's even more important. Singer Henning Basse delivered a theatric show and right from the start the quintet played like a well-oiled machine. As they just have one album under their belt, it was very predictable what songs would be played. They headed straight into Dead Man's Shadows. After this fast, heavy rocker Henning Basse welcomed the fans... "e;Good evening Kerkrade! How are you? It's great to be back!"e; The band of Henning Basse and guitarist / keyboarder Oliver Palotai played one of their first shows in Kerkrade - back in February 2009. Time to slow down a bit for Fall Of Byzanz. And like on the album, The Piper should follow, great tune. Afterwards Henning kinda introduced the band.. "e;This is my family! Welcome Sons Of Seasons!"e; And they left the stage, only Oliver stayed to present a keyboard solo, later the others joined in and it ended with a solo of drummer Daniel Schild. The instrumental gave Henning a little break, but for Third Moon Rising he was back. "e;This next one I want you to go fucking crazy!"e; Henning shouted and slowly they kicked off Wheel Of Guilt. Guitarist Pepe Pierez and bassist Jürgen Steinmetz were always in motion, using every inch of the small stage and just stopped for backing vocals. "e;This is the last song for tonight! We are working on a new album which is hopefully out this fall..."e; Henning informed the fans. "e;It's a great time for us, this time it's very good, very special..."e; And it was obvious that the guys really enjoyed to play live, even for this small, but a very enthusiastic crowd. The closer was the heavy Fallen Family. Then Sons Of Seasons left the stage, but loudly got called back. Some fans shouted for more beer, someone else wanted a child of them... which made the band and the other fans laugh. Others were just demanding more songs. They only played one more song - Blind Man's Resolution - and that was it. Too soon it was over, but it only took a few moments til the guys showed up to hang out with the fans - signing CDs, posing for photos and spent time talking with their fans.

Sons Of Seasons - live in Dortmund

Actually I wanted to see Sons Of Seasons on May 10th at Bochum Zeche, but that show had to be re-scheduled and is now taking place Sept. 2nd! So I decided to see them in Dortmund, even if due to the late beginning I won't be able to stay til the end - unfortunately public transport is a nightmare during the week.
At 9PM Slick's Kitchen entered the stay, I haven't heard about them before, but their punk rock / sleaze rock was fun. Especially the cover versions they played incl. Michael Jackson's Billy Jean in a punk rock version, but they also offered some metal classics like Breaking The Law and Ace Of Spades. Slick's Kitchen isn't a cover band, they also played some of their own songs and the mix worked well. Most entertaining were the talk of their drummer between the songs - sometimes he even left the stage and let Slick do the talking. You can definitely have a good time when Slick's Kitchen is playing live!
After a short change over it was time for Sons Of Seasons! The album is out for only two weeks and they are playing the first shows. But all the members are active for many years and so a professional performance could be expected.
They opened up with the title track of their debut Gods Of Vermin - and they were going full force right from the start. And beside Wintersmith they played every song from Gods Of Vermin - and a new track, an instrumental. Founder Oliver Palotai played guitar and partly keyboards while Pepe Pierez took over the lead guitar parts. Even if there weren't many people, the band delivered a professional and energetic performance. Especially singer Henning Basse's performance made the show special, coz his theatrical show and his great voice made you forget that they played the small stage of Garage-Land! My highlights were Fall Of Byzanz and The Piper. Unfortunately I couldn't stay til the end and so I missed the special performance of Epica's Simone Simons, but I saw her perform several times and so I know what to expect - and regret even more that I had to leave early.
The quintet played only songs from their debut and not as some might have expected some songs from the bands they are / were playing with. And so the only played a bit over one hour - incl. Blind Man's Resolution as an encore. Not at every show in a club like Garage-Land the sound is that good, but with someone like Dirk Schlächter doing the job, it's no surprise. I'm really looking forward to see Sons Of Seasons again in September and hopefully more people will show up... Thanks for a great evening!
