Omen

Omen
(Roadrunner Records - 2010)

With Soulfly's 7th album Max Cavalera and his mates continue what they offered with Conquer. Same but different. This time world music and ethnic elements are woven in, but stay in the background. This album is offering thrash metal mixed with hardcore and a punk attitude. Straight riffs attack you, fat grooves steamroll you and delicate solos will win you over. Someone with a sharp tongue would say, they remain static, that they no longer offer varying sounds. I disagree, even if Soulfly haven't developed something new, Omen is a statement that they haven't lost their musical roots - and that they are still rooted in thrash metal and hardcore. I love it and I can't get enough of the new album! Max & co. are sounding more like Sepultura then Sepultura does! The opener is called Bloodbath And Beyond and they head into this one without an intro. It's a punky thrasher with a crustcore feel and melodic breakdowns. Rise Of The Fallen is a mean groover which features guest vocalist Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan). Max belches the title and Greg seems to collapse while doing the lyrics. More 80's thrash you'll get with The Great Depression - a song which shows Cavalera's past, the Sepultura-like songs is spiced up with a catchy groove. Kinda the same you'll get with Vulture Culture and it's a straight forward one which reminds me a bit of Nailbomb. More thrash you'll get with Mega Doom, but it's the combination of fast and slow passages. Jeffrey Dahmer is a tune which invites you to sing along and live it will be killer. Kingdom will also be a highlight of their upcoming live shows, it offers fat riff attacks and a mean refrain. Lethal Injection is a song where Soulfly meets Prong - and so they have Tommy Victor invited to join them.
In a nutshell, this album is a brutal hard blow and if one still wants to complain about stagnation, then Soulfly do it on a very high level. To me it's a great album and I'm already an Omen addict! I don't care about progress, this album is killer!

Prophecy

Prophecy
(Roadrunner Records - 2004)

Max Cavalera made himself known in the metal world through his band Sepultura and later with the first Soulfly releases. This is album no. 4 of the Brazilian metalhead. In the past Cavalera combined metal with elements of Brazilian folk music, this time he pushed the limits a little more and combined metal and reggae - Moses. On other songs he used world music elements, jazzy parts and on Wings the vocals of Asha Rabouin add a touch of R'n'B. But there are still typical Soulfly songs. The title track is a powerful track while Porrada is not just powerful, it's mean! And they also recorded some 2-minute attacks called Execution Style and Defeat U. Btw, Mr. Cavalera got assistants by former Megadeth four-stringer Dave Ellefson.
Final resume... Nothing for purist - as former albums - , but for this one you have to have an even broader view. The variety is probably seem to be too much, but the album sound homogenous. Give it a try!
