Dream Machines

Dream Machines
(Point Music - 2002)

This is the 2nd album of the German-British hard rockers and it's called Dream Machines. Many might thought that the all-star project won't release more then one album, now the quintet is proof them wrong!
Opening with Silver Dream Machine the band shows the musical direction to the ones who hear them for the first time, it's simply hard rock. But isn't it even harder to write a good, but simple song then to write a complex one?!?!
The quintet recorded 10 songs which partly might remind you of the 70's sound-wise, remind you of the sound of Deep Purple, but that's no big surprise, coz keyboarder Don Airey played with them. A little harder as the rest of the album is the track Never Again which was co-written by Doro Pesch. Other tracks like Banished and Far Below Zero were initiated by the events of 9-11 and show that this is still move people. Interesting is the song Forever where singer Gary Barden was joined in a duet by British rock lady Aino Laos.
If you liked their debut, buy this one! If you are into hard rock and liked the former bands of the members - okay, perhaps not if you are an H-Blockz fan - then buy this album and spread the word! Keep your eyes open for some acoustic shows and don't miss them!

Silver
(Barfly Music - 2001)

You don't know Silver? Well, no surprise, this is a new band. But some of the members are well-known in the hard rock scene. Singer Gary Barden first got attention when he was joining MSG - back in the 80's... If memory serves. To tell a hard rock fan who Don Airey is, would be carrying coals to newcastle. Same with guitarist Bernie Tormé. And some might know Michael Voss, too. Here he is playing bass and was producing, but in the past he got attention as a singer and guitarist in Mad Max, Casanova and Demon Drive. Some might even remember him as second guitar player in Bonfire at the Point Blank tour and the following Live... The Best album.
But I wanted to talk about Silver.... A glittern star at the hard rock scene, coz even if they are playing traditional hard rock they sound fresh. It's the combination of good old rocking guitars and modern keyboard sounds which makes them sound different. But all that wouldn't mean a thing without the excellent vocals of Gary Barden! He makes the star shine.
Don't want to pick single songs, but to get an idea listen to Brother Kills Brother and Christine. These songs kinda stack out their musical area and are the corner-stones of Silver. Additionally you can listen to Silverous or Sweet Sister Love. A decent piece of hard rock, not a musical revolution, but above average. If this isn't just a project, they surely will convince with their next release even more.

The band is new, but for everybody who is in hard rock the names won't be new! Singer Gary Barden (ex-MSG, etc.) teamed up with Don Airey (keyboards) and Bernie Tormé (guitars). The guys of the rhythm section might not... On drums Marco Minnemann of H-Blockx and on bass Michael Voss who also produced, engineered and mixed the album. Usually he plays guitar and sings and is known for his work with Mad Max, Casanova and Demon Drive.
Musically the quintet offers hard rock / heavy metal, but with modern sounds which Pretender shows very well. A track with a certain aggression, screaming guitars and a catchy vocal line. Many hard rock bands still sound like in the 80's, but this group managed to record hard rock / heavy metal tunes with a modern sound. But the voice of Gary Barden makes this album outstanding. A brilliant singer who enchants the listener. But without the extremely talented musicians who back him up. A fast track is Marianna which reminds me of a track Demon Drive, but that's only during the chorus.... The track Christine is a balladesque song which represents the softer side of this band. Between the songs are some short parts like Walk The Stage (feat. Don Airey & Gary Barden) and Sergei's Revenge (feat. Don Airey).
With Brother Kill Brother they recorded a heavy rock which reminds me of MSG and Rainbow, but both are outstanding bands and are part of their past.
A decent album which is interesting for fans of hard rock and heavy metal, especially if you are into bands like MSG, Rainbow and similar bands.
