Seventh Void hasn't arise from the ashes of Type O Negative, even if the label's bio says so. Seventh Void was founded by ex-Danzig / Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey and Danzig / Type O Negative drummer in 2003, but it took them awhile to find a stable line-up. The quartet recorded Heaven Is Gone which was co-produced and mixed by Vinnie Paul who also released the album in 2009 in the USA. Now Napalm Records is releasing it outside the US with a different cover artwork. So that's the basics.
The opener Closing In shows the direction, ultra-heavy riffs combined with Soundgarden-esque vocals. Singer and guitarist Kenny Hickey and his mates present a doom monster - with a dash sludge and a splash of alternative metal (vocals). The title track Heaven Is Gone is catchy and offers a cool lead guitar part. For a brief moment Hickey's vocals reminded me of Zakk Wylde at Pride & Glory times... The foursome did a video for Heaven Is Gone, so check it out!
With Broken Sky they recorded a catchy riff-based tune which has a dash of 70's / 80's doom. Again the guitar play is ennobling the song. At Shadow On Me the alternative metal elements are a bit more prominent, but the song is still heavy. The song will need a few spins, but then it'll haunt you! Other highlights are Death Of A Junkie and the closer Last Walk In The Light. Let's hope they compose more tracks like Last Walk In The Light next time. The guitar work is great and enriches this melancholy tune.
Doom metal spiced up with other sounds is what you get, so doom fans who aren't purists this is a treat. Fans of stoner metal or sludge should check out the Brooklyners. A good debut album and I guess it won't take them long to present a follow-up... At least that's what I hope.
