Madness Of War

Madness Of War
(Cruz del Sur - 2010)

OverMaster is the new band from ex-White Skull singer Gus Gabarr˛. They have recently signed with Cruz del Sur Music and Madness Of War is their first album.
Those familiar with White Skull will find few surprises in the music presented here. The style of the band is very similar to the other Italian band and you could quite easily see this as a follow-up to The Ring Of The Ancients. The guitars have the same bite, the tone being very gritty and heavy sounding. Probably the closest other band I could think to compare OverMaster to is Blaze Bayley whose songs also have that deep resonance and bassy sound. On saying this OverMaster's songs are generally not up to the same standard as Blaze Bayley. Not that they are bad at all, just not anything particularly new. As I said, if you've heard White Skull or any countless other heavy/speed metal bands you will know what to expect here.
The musicianship throughout the band is extremely good. The guitarists are the obvious driving force of the music, showcasing heavy riffs and blistering solos, but the thundering powerhouses of the bass and drums providing a solid base on which to build. Add in to this Gabarr˛'s unique sounding voice and you have a solid album that should appeal to a wide cross-section of metalheads as it is heavier than power metal yet not so brutal as the more extreme genres. A solid effort which I hope the band will build on in years to come.
