The Sound Of Lucifer Storming Heaven

The Sound Of Lucifer Storming Heaven
(Dockyard 1 - 2007)

The Greek black metal band Necromantia started back in 1989 and started releasing demos, etc. a year later. With The Sound Of Lucifer Storming Heaven the duo released the first studio album after 7 years. In the meantime they released some best-of and a box set, beside that The Magus (vocals / bass) was busy as an engineer and label boss.
Right from the beginning Necromantia were doing things different - instead of a guitar they used an 8-string bass! They are considered as one of the pioneers of the second wave of black metal and set standards for the Greek black metal scene.
The title track is the opening one and starts quite solemnly, then staccato bass riffs and thunder... Then some raw black metal comes over the listener... Dark and with battle sounds. I miss a guitar, even if I think that it's a cool idea to use a 8-string bass, but only to replace a second guitar. The songs are mid- to up-tempo and dominated by synthesizer and bass. The screams of The Magnus are still a trademark for Necromantia. On Order Of The Black Sphinx they have a slow and grave part, then speeds up again. On For The Elder Magi: I-Eibon The Necromancer they have parts which have mediaeval elements, but due to the screams and shrieks they stick to the black metal genre. Other parts would also fit to some Viking metal stuff... The songs offer different sounds and it's entertaining, but well... I miss a guitar and the sound should be better to make it a real joy.
Some might say that the raw sound is perfect for black metal, but in my opinion it would be more powerful with a clearer sound. Its somehow muddy... They were one of the leading black metal bands from Greece, if they can keep this position with this album, I doubt.
