The Swedish band Lifelover was founded in 2005 and Sjukdom is their 4th full-length album. What started as a black metal band developed into a post rock / depressive rock band which wears their musical past on their sleeves, so you'll find black metal elements in several songs.
Rock riffs take you into Sjukdom (means sickness), Svart Galla is the first track first the guitar comes closer, piano joins in and after a spoken words part they speed up, combine post rock with a dash of punk and gothic metal. A dark, depressive tune, but beautiful in it's own way. Led By Misfortune is a fast one with black metal passages combined with rock riffs. The end is a bit psychotic. Expandera is a post black metal track with spoken words, somehow enchanting... Homocidial Tendencies is more an interlude with 1:41 minutes, it's full of despair and bitterness. Disturbing... It's a sonic roller coaster ride, but with more lows then highs, more dark and threatening elements then light moments. Especially the sound sequences they embed in their songs are disturbing, coz they seem so out of place. But at the other hand this makes the songs more interesting and gives them something unique. Horans Hora has a memorable riff, even if the songs has some repetitiveness it's still entertaining. And they know when it's time to change, so that the listener won't get bored. But they return to the memorable riff later in the song. The closer Karma is a heavy, riff-based track with black-ish elements and a bittersweet keyboard melody. To get an idea of Sjukdom I recommend to check out: Karma, Led By Misfortune, Svart Galla and Horans Hora.
It's somehow sounds like a manic-depressive person has created this album... Sjukdom won't please everybody, but it intensiveness will move you - whether you like it or not!
