Set Sail The Prairie

Set Sail The Prairie
(Sub City - 2007)

Another band I haven't heard of befor. The guys from Portland, Oregon started back in 2001 and this is their 3rd full-length CD and it's called Set Sail The Prairie which was also a song on their last CD. The album is splitted in 2 parts - Summer Solstice and Winter Solstice - both are presented by a song. Every other song is related to a month, but don't ask me why a song is related to a certain month. The songs tell stories of a journey around the world and you can follow their travel on a map in the booklet where you also find some more .
Musically they offer some kind of art rock.... emo rock... indie punk... post pop... and alternative sounds mixed with different sound elements. The songs take you on a journey and so the songs vary. There are rocking tunes and there are very relaxed ones, but the listener has to have an open-mind. Partly singer Christopher James Ruff sounds fragile in one moment and then powerful and energetic - and usually the vocal lines are quite catchy. Guitar riffs or soft piano sounds... And sometimes you even here a galopping horse or a cow bell... Everything is possible - it seems. Its hard to describe their music - their label calls it 'pop infused art rock' - and so I can only recommended to check them out, if you are into art rock and progressive ambient.... Listen to Harbor or Clouds to get an idea.
