There Is Light (But It's Not For Me)

There Is Light (But It's Not For Me)
(Massacre Records - 2011)

Danish death metal veterans Illdisposed celebrate their 20th anniversary with a new album, what else?! During their career frontman Bo Summer spiced up their groove-based death metal with varies flavors, this time they pick up what they started with 1-800 Vindication where they used some electronic elements and sounds. The addition of electronic sounds made their raw death metal more atmospheric, back then the electronic sounds were more into the background, woven into the Illdisposed sound. Now at There Is Light it's a little different, the electronic sounds are more up-front, take over some melodic parts and are equal to the guitars. All this make their sound more memorable and modern. Did they listened too much to Rammstein? This album will divide the fans, coz fans of their past releases might turn away as they find the album too experimental while some might get into Illdisposed with this album. For me it's too much electro sounds which weakens the brutal death metal, even if they offer a wall of heavy guitars and some catchy grooves. Bo's deep grunts are still the same and kinda represent their death metal roots best. For me this 20th anniversary album isn't something to celebrate, I would love to hear the album without all the electronic knick-knack - and I think I would give it a different rating.... From what I hear of guitar riffs, solos and leads this isn't a band album... even a good one, but the keyboard and samples. Sometimes less is more!

For Those Who Walk Behind Us

For Those Who Walk Behind Us
(Massacre Records - 2009)

The Danish Illdisposed are back with a new album - and a new label. They are now signed to Massacre Records who just re-released the bands last 2 studio albums. Bo Summer and his mates showed their experimental side on the last albums, the new album will show, if they continue this journey? Or if they will return to their roots?
They kick off with the heavy groover Blood On Your Parade. But then shouter Bo Summer joins in and the song gets something mean. Later you hear the sound of marching feet accompanying the heavy riffs. A heavy track with groove, melody and harsh vocals. The fast Just Come And Get Me brings back the electro sounds as well as different vocal styles, but it's the melodic guitar lead which will hook you up! The following Seeking Truth - Telling Lies is pursuing this the choosen path and fits well to Just Come And Get Me, the song has the same ingredients. Less experimental, more straight forward is To Those Who Walk Behind Me. Again the guitar play is giving the song something special... Adds the final touch. There is some electro sound in the background which can be mistaken for the buzz of speakers, but its a sound element they chose to add for a part of the song. While Johnny is a quite typical Illdisposed song they let the song fade out with some old tune... Fine Young Cannibals' Johnny Come Home. Cool idea! For This Unscheduled Moment they speed up a bit, but the biggest surprise is the Danish track Nu Gik Det Lige Så Godt. Slowly they start with guitars and some spoken words, then they head into a heavy groover with aggression and melody. Well done!
The album is produced by Fredrik Norstöm, so nothing to complain sound-wise. Fans of the Danish death metal legend should hurry up to get the limited box set with a T-shirt, lanyard and signed photo card. It's limited to 1,000 copies, so don't waste time!

Burn Me Wicked

Burn Me Wicked
(Massacre Records - 2009)

The Danish death metal outfit Illdisposed is around for almost 2 decades, a new album is on the way and Massacre Records decided to re-release 1-800 Vindication (2004) and Burn Me Wicked (2006) now. The re-release has 2 bonus tracks, both live recordings. Dark and Weak Is Your God are the live tracks, again the sound isn't very good. These are bonus tracks, so the weak sound is tolerable.
They started with 1-800 Vindication into a new era, they used samples, synthesizers and clean vocals - and they stick to the new, the more modern sound. At Shine Crazy they combine elements of their early days with a heavy groove and a modern sound - and even black-ish elements. Case Of The Late Pig is presenting electro sounds and the song becomes a groove monster with the aggressive growls of Bo Summer. With Back To The Streets they add some clean vocals - Mikkel Sandager of Mercenary joined them for some songs - and the refrain mimics the Backstreet Boys and their song Incomplete. At other songs they honor bands like Bolt Thrower and At The Gates while Slave is a citing Master And Servant from Depeche Mode - what a wide range of bands! The closer is Illdispunk'd and show them in a Sodom-like metal hymn where they use different languages!
As the re-release of 1-800 Vindication this re-release offers only 2 live tracks, so it's mainly interesting for fans who just discovered the band recently or don't own this one. A cool album which offers a broad variety of songs.

1-800 Vindication

1-800 Vindication
(Massacre Records - 2009)

The Danish death metal outfit Illdisposed is around for almost 2 decades, a new album is on the way and Massacre Records decided to re-release 1-800 Vindication (2004) and Burn Me Wicked (2006) now. The re-release has 2 bonus tracks, both live recordings. With Near The Gates and Ich bin verloren in Berlin you get a short glimpse of how they sound live. The sound isn't perfect, but shows their power and especially Ich bin verloren in Berlin is fun.
Illdisposed kick off with I Believe In Me and surprised their fans at the time of the initial release with samples and clear vocal parts. It seems that the Danish wanted to redefine their sound - and many fans like the album, just because they cross boarders. Heavy riffing and melodic leads dominate Dark. A killer is Now We're History with it's heavy groove and anthem-like backings. At When You Scream the electro sounds are more prominent and so this one isn't something the purists will dig! Slowly they kick off Still Sane, this heavy groover also offers synthesizers and has an almost catchy refrain. For You Against The World they speed up and mean growls are accompanied by razor-sharp riffing. A true neck breaker is The Final Step!
Sound wiz Tue Madsen put the finishing touch on the album, so sound-wise you can't complain. It seems that this album was building the bridge between their past and the future. Illdisposed fans will surely own this album and 2 bonus tracks aren't a good argument to invest money, but for the ones who don't have this album, take you chance and get a copy now!

(Diehard Music - 2000)

On this CD the band give tribute to their heroes / influences. They picked eleven songs from bands like Carcass (Reek Of Putreaction), Paradise Lost (Rapture), Venom (Nightmare) as well as Motörhead's Killed By Death and AC/DC's Beating Around The Bush. An interesting CD which shows a little more about the band...
Fans of the band might prefer a 'real' album instead of this kinda tribute thingy.... In my opinion the cover versions of Paradise Lost, Motörhead and AC/DC are the most interesting ones, coz they are not from the same genre...
