Vintage Love - The Best

Vintage Love - The Best
(Avenue Of Allies - 2011)

Iain Ashley Hersey is an American guitarist who was mainly influenced by bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Rainbow. But also bei guitarists like Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton, and hhis compositions are based in 80's hard rock and he adds a dash of blues here and there.

His first solo album was released in 1999 and was called Fallen Angel. Now two solo albums later we get a best of called Vintage Love. Why doing a compilation? Well, perhaps to give the best songs another chance, coz the original releases didn't get the attention they deserved... Anyway, at his albums he worked with different musicians, but most obvious are the different singers. He could hook up with Graham Bonnet, Dante Marchi, David Montgomery, Paul Shortino, Mike Stone, Doogie White, Randy Williams and Carsten 'Lizard' Schulz. The German singer sang on the majority of songs on Hersey's last album Nomad, only L.A. Connection was sung by Doogie White.

The songs are in a chronological order and it's nice to get the information about the singers, coz not everybody will be familiar with every vocalist. I confess I never heard of Dante Marchi before and he's the one singing the first 2 songs and I like his voice and will check him out soon. Another surprise was for me Randy Williams who sings on Blink Of An Eye ot the 2005 Holy Grail album.

Voodoo Spirits kicks off with a Volksmusik passage, picking up the idea Accept used for 1982's Restless And Wild album. In this case Hersey's guitar takes over and leads you into an Hammond-laden 70's rocker.

Fans of the named bands should check out Vintage Love, it's a good compilation of Iain Ashley Hersey's work and due to the different singers it's quite entertaining. Okay, it isn't a compilation of killer tunes, but they are decent and if you like that sound, it will be a good addition to your collection.
