30 Years Of Hel

30 Years Of Hel
(AFM Records - 2012)

Texas metal institution Helstar is celebrating their 30th anniversary this year and earlier this year the had a big anniversary 'party', a concert in their hometown Houston which was recorded for CD and DVD! Now 30 Years Of Hel is out, but unfortunately I can only talk about the audio tracks.

James Rivera and his pals kick off with Angels Fall To Hell, a great way to get into a live show. The set contains 20 tracks and there are tracks from all albums, so it's really a retrospective of their career. I think a song every fan will miss is Remnants Of War, but that's the only classic which is missing - even if everybody will miss some song which is somehow special to oneself. As usual the guitar play is excellent and the rhythm section delivers the perfect playground. Personally I would like a crisper drum sound, but well... That James Rivera is a charismatic frontman and superb singer metal fans know - he proofs it once again. My main criticism is that the live atmosphere is missing, sure you hear Mr. Rivera talk to the audience, but you rarely hear the audience.

Anyway, for fans of the Texan quintet this album is a must-buy! And I like the idea to celebrate an anniversary with a live album which is a kind of best-of. And as a DVD/2CD package it's also value-for-money. For fans of bands like Seven Witches or Malice who like James Rivera's vocals this a great way to discover the Helstar sonic universe.

Glory Of Chaos

Glory Of Chaos
(AFM Records - 2010)

James Rivera, Larry Brannagan and their pals known as Helstar are back with Glory Of Chaos, and guys this is an awesome comeback!!!! I never heard Helstar so violent and thrashy (sometimes the guitars sound like they were played by Testament) and of course we can hear one more time the great voice of James Rivera, one the greatest singers in the entire metal scene. It seems that this time Helstar are back to remain between us because this is the third album in three years included the re-recorded tracks album, and finally they found a dimension for their sound, this time their goal is to break our necks for too much head banging!!!! Do you think that I'm kidding??? Do you think that my judgement on this review can be too much kind??? Let's start with the track by track....
Angels Fall To Hell is the opening track for this CD that starts with a short intro and after a few seconds... Let the massacre begins!!! The next track Pandemonium says everything from the title.... a real pandemonium!!!!!! Monarch Of Bloodshed remind the classic Helstar sound, pure U.S. metal at his best!!! Bone Crusher (!!!!)...... also this time the title is clear and simple, double bass drums and vocal lines made for crushing our bones!!! Summer Of Hate is a slow time-typical Helstar style, not ordinary and with a great guitars job. Next track Deathtrap is the return for Helstar to speed and thrash, and Rivera's voice touch high peaks.... I love it! And it's not over yet, Helstar want to kill our ears with Anger, another killer song, a real mosh pit builder!!!! Trinity Of Heresy is a journey through the various Helstar styles, a journey through the history of U.S. metal. Alma Negra (for the non-Spanish people is 'black soul') is the faster track of this CD.... I don't know a better way to close this spectacular CD!!! The closer of this awesome CD is Zero One, a simple outro.
I am happy, because I hear one best albums of this year..... BUY OR DIE !!!!

The King Of Hell

The King Of Hell
(AFM Records - 208)

The American band Helstar was founded in the early 80's and released 4 albums in that decade. From the beginning their trademark was James Rivera's voice, but also the US metal combined with progressive structures. The riffing was influenced by thrash metal. And this still describes their sound, even if now more powerful and with an up-to-date production.
The opener is the title track The King Of Hell which starts slowly with guitar and female vocals, but then they kick off! And it becomes clear that they add some heaviness and power, but stick to their guns. The song is typical Helstar with partly high-pitched vocals, but it seems to me that the bass lines are more prominent... Bassist Jerry Abarca as well as drummer Russel DeLeon get space to show their skills during the opener, even if the songs is mainly based on the guitar riffing of Larry Barragan and Robert Trevino. Perhaps The King Of Hell isn't the best choice for an opening track, coz I miss a bit a catchy refrain and it's perhaps too complex for drawing attention... But Helstar songs always needed some spins to grow... The faster The Plague Called Man would have been a better opener in my opinion, but well... Heavy riffs and a great solo. And somehow this can also be said about Tormentor which comes along with a great guitar melody line. When Empires Fall starts with some drum beat and is a bit slower, but therefor they add some heaviness... At this one the progressive structures in the song writing are more obvious. And the fiver shows a slightly different side of the Helstar sound. At Wicked Disposition they present some slow guitar-based parts, but also fast passages. The song is probably showing best the different facets of the Helstar sound... The catchy Caress Of The Dead they played live already and it did well, I think it will stay in the set list. Melancholy and slow kicks off In My Darkness which later becomes a doomy rocker. For me one of the highlights on The King Of Hell - beside Caress Of The Dead. But for the last tune they speed up again and so with Garden Of Temptation they end get back to the more typical fast Helstar stuff.
The legendary Remnants Of War line-up delivers another typical Helstar album and which can keep up with the 80's releases. Fans of Helstar will love The King Of Hell, others might have problems with the high-pitched vocals, but that's part of their sound and without it wouldn't be Helstar anymore! In my opinion James Rivera and his band combines well their 80's US metal with heaviness and a modern production. I recommend to check out: Tormentor, Caress Of The Dead (both tracks were already released on Sins Of The Past), Wicked Disposition, When Empires Fall and In My Darkness.

Sins Of The Past

Sins Of The Past
(AFM Records - 2007)

Helstar is still one of the best US metal bands and have with James Rivera an extraordinary singer. After releasing 4 masterpieces in the 80's the American band broke up. Rivera was active through all the years singing in different band like Vicious Rumors, Seven Witches and Destiny's End. In 2006 they used the 20th anniversary of the release of Remnants Of War to reunited the line-up of this album. Sins Of The Past isn't a new album, but it has the best tracks of the 4 releases of the 80's, but re-recorded and so in nowadays sound quality. Long time fans of the band will have the albums anyway, but there is a new generation of metal fans and for them this album is a fantastic way to get into Helstar. Sure, different people would have choose different songs, but I think they got together a good compilation. Additionally they recorded 2 new songs as an appetizer for the coming album. Tormentor is still Helstar, but sounds a bit different compared with their early works. They still play US metal, guitar-driven and with breaks and mid-tempo passages. The other new track is called Caress Of The Dead which is a heavy rocker with thunderous guitar riffs, pounding bass and hammering drums. The up-tempo tune has some catchiness, but still needs more then one spin to last. On the other hand it's never easy to compete with classic tunes which you know for ages.
I can recommend this album to all US metal fans who don't have the albums in their collection. Fans of bands like Cage who don't know Helstar should give it a try! Can't wait til the new album of the Texan band is in the stores!
