Sól (artbook cover)

Sól I & II
(Lupus Lounge - 2011)

With their demo Grátr Helrunar become a classic and was re-released in 2009. Now the duo from Münster is back with two CDs called Sól, but even if the title might suggest something different Helrunar present cold, dark pagan black metal. In the dark days of winter the sun isn't spending warmth and so this album is like a soundtrack for the cold winter days. The first CD is called Der Dorn im Nebel and the second part is called Zweige der Erinnerung. Fans of Helrunar know that the lyrics are very important for Skald Draugir and so the lyrics are a key point to get into Helrunar's world.
Gefrierpunkt (= freezing point) is a short intro with spoken words which creates an icy atmosphere and leads into Kollapsar, a fast black metal track which offers different speeds and changing atmospheres. And will make fans of their early days happy, coz Kollapsar sounds almost like a song of Grátr. At Unter dem Gletscher Skald Draugir uses spoken word passages to create a special atmosphere. Actually it's like a journey into a cold world and every song is a new day on this sonic trip. And this study trip takes you up North, offers some mystic lyrical elements, but they aren't just looking back in time - like some other bands do -, Helrunar create a possible future scenario (Europa nach dem Eis). At tracks like Tiefer als der Tag they surprise you with some classic acoustic guitar combined with whispered words, but then they return to the heavier sounds. Well, if you know Helrunar, then it won't surprise you.
Even if it seems that the songs are quite alike, they aren't! Especially when you understand the lyrics you'll enjoy Sól.
Helrunar created an intensive piece of metal. Cold, dark, sometimes threatening, sometimes full of dispair - Sól will move you! If you have the chance, get the artbook! Kudos!

Grátr

Grátr
(Lupus Lounge - 2009)

German Helrunar started back in 2003 and released in 2005 the demo Grátr which was limited to 500 copies. The demo was welcomed by the scene and soon the demo was sold out. With this demo the band already rattled the throne of German black metal. The fans were asking for the album and so it finally gets re-released by Lupus Lounge. The first 3,000 copies are a luxury digi-pack with a bonus CD.
The trio kicks off slowly with acoustic guitar, wind blowing and spoken words - Der Fährtensucher. The German words transport some dark, cold atmosphere, then the song explodes! Raune mit der Tiefe. But fans of Helrunar will know about the magical combination of slow parts with acoustic guitar and black metal blast attacks. But even that doesn't describe the sound fully. The backing choir gives the track something majestic - for a moment. Seelenwinter starts again with acoustic guitar and the blowing wind. After a fast riff-based part they storm off again... Blasting riffs. They vary in speed and atmosphere. At Mřrket Under Verden they put a beautiful melody on top of a fast blast part. With Hornung they offer an acoustic interlude, give a little break before they present Das heilige Feuer. Actually you can pick every song and it should win you over! There are no fillers! Nothing mediocre!
Helrunar achieved with this demo a lot and many fans still think it's their best release. Helrunar started on a very high quality level - black metal with intelligent lyrics in German and Norwegian. Due to their lyrics which are based in the Nordic mythology they are linked to the pagan metal scene. But actually it doesn't matter what you call their style, coz it's simply a good album!
