Wake Up Call

Wake Up Call
(Liljegren Records - 2010)

Hardcore Circus is a new band, but the members are all active for years. With Wake Up Call they present an album full of sleazy heavy rock and even if they aren't sounding as dirty as Mötley Crüe did in their early years, they have this attitude. The opener She Goes Down is a catchy rocker with a cool guitar solo. Vocally you won't find similarities to Mötley Crüe, singer Jorgen Bolmstad has a powerful voice which is always on top. Under My Skin is balladesque rocker which hooks you up right away. CJ Grimmark's guitar play is ennobling this tune. A real heavy rocker is Who I Am, very sleaze and it sounds a bit dirtier... But also quite 80's-like with the backings. Bassist Nalley Pahlsson and drummer Joakim Bloohm deliver the heavy rhythmic playground for Grimmark's and Bolmstad's guitar play. The foursome offers 10 tracks on Wake Up Call, all well written and performed, so nothing to complain. But I miss a real catchy track, something which sticks, a chorus you can't forget for days... Easier said than done, Wake Up Call is entertaining and I guess after several spins something will stick... The modern heavy rocker Life has the potential... At the tune Hardcore Circus I would wish that Jorgen Bolmstad sounds dirtier... At least the backing vocals are Mötley Crüe-like. Tattooed Junkie is a party rocker while the closer Miracle is based on a heavy beat and a soaring guitar melody. One more time Jorgen Bolmstad adds expressive vocals and a catchy refrain makes it easy to get into this tune. And should make you spin the album again.
Well, there isn't an overly catchy tune, but all songs have catchy elements. Wake Up Call is an entertaining album which don't present something new, but as long as it's fun, who cares? If you like melodic heavy rock, sleaze metal, than give Hardcore Circus a try!
