In 1999 former Cynic bassist Sean Malone released the self-titled debut of Gordian Knot. The album was a statement of the genre of rock and metal. On the debut Malone was joined by members of King Crimson, Dream Theater and Watchtower. It took 3 years to get the follow-up Emergent into the stores. On a heavier and more complex way rock, metal and fusion was melting together. On Emergent Sean Malone was joined by: Jason Gobel (Cynic; g), Bill Bruford (King Crimson, Yes, Genesis; dr/perc.), Steve Hackett (Genesis; g), Sean Reinert (Cynic; dr/perc.) and Paul Masvidal (Cynic; g). And so the album present the original line-up of Cynic reunited for the studio and appearances of musicians like Bill Bruford and Steve Hackett make this album outstanding. Producer Scott Burns is the studio godfather of the 90's death metal and added a superb production to the instrumental journey. Usually I'm not a fan of instrumental albums, but this one is different. Not because this is done on a very high level, even the more complex parts are beautiful, enchanting and kinda catchy. For musicians and fans of prog rock / metal in general this is a must! A demonstration of first class musicianship without ego-trips.
