(Peaceville Records - 2013)

Darkthrone's Nocturno Culto needed a way to channel his creativity and so he started Gift Of Gods, a one-man-project. With the EP Receive he steps into the spotlight. He recorded 4 tracks including a cover of Universe's Looking For An Answer.

The opener is Enlightening Strikes, an almost 9 minute long opus. Nocturno Culto presents a heavy, riff-based metal tune, his vocals are deep and raspy, adding a different flavor. The song is a melodic heavy metal tune with retro and doom references. The title track is an instrumental. Receive is a bit heavier and offers tempi changes, but as I'm not a fan of instrumentals it can't convince me. Sorry, but that's just me.

The up-tempo rocker Looking For An Answer is more up my alley. It's a short, catchy track which get's quite heavy when played in Nocturno Culto's way. The closer Last Solstice opens with the cark of a crow, then the riff sets in an it sounds quite Balls To The Wall-ish, but then the track becomes a doomy heavy metal tune. The vocals are more spoken words and the atmosphere of the song reminds me slightly of early Mercyful Fate...

Gift Of Gods is a pleasant piece of traditional heavy metal spiced up with other sounds. If you like traditional heavy metal you should check out Receive!
