Most heard of the German quartet the first time in 2000, at that time they were still a sextet when their first album for Century Media hit the stores. With Jade the band had the chance to play a few shows with The Gathering / My Dying Bride and to tour with Therion / Voivod. At that time still a sextet they got a lot attention, especially singer Stefanie Duchêne who has a dark, warm voice and on stage she act more like a rock singer than a girl of the gothic metal scene. Their kind of gothic rock is kinda building a bridge between gothic and rock / metal, but why took it almost 2 years to release Serpentine? Line-up changes. Now as a quartet they reduced their gothic rock to the basics and none will miss the more keyboard based sound of their past. Children Of The Sun is e.g. a slow atmospheric song with a rock vibe added by the guitars to the gothic keyboard sounds. Flowing Tears found their way to walk the edge between gothic and metal, to combine elements of both genres, even if some rock / metal fans might think that there are still too many keyboards.... But they are heavier than on their previous releases, more rock. Some might compare them with their label colleagues Lacuna Coil and there are some similarities, but they are different! Everyone who liked Jade, will like Serpentine as well. Serpentine sounds more mature, it's kinda back to the basics...
