Serpentine

Serpentine
(Century Media - 2002)

Most heard of the German quartet the first time in 2000, at that time they were still a sextet when their first album for Century Media hit the stores. With Jade the band had the chance to play a few shows with The Gathering / My Dying Bride and to tour with Therion / Voivod. At that time still a sextet they got a lot attention, especially singer Stefanie Duchêne who has a dark, warm voice and on stage she act more like a rock singer than a girl of the gothic metal scene. Their kind of gothic rock is kinda building a bridge between gothic and rock / metal, but why took it almost 2 years to release Serpentine? Line-up changes. Now as a quartet they reduced their gothic rock to the basics and none will miss the more keyboard based sound of their past. Children Of The Sun is e.g. a slow atmospheric song with a rock vibe added by the guitars to the gothic keyboard sounds. Flowing Tears found their way to walk the edge between gothic and metal, to combine elements of both genres, even if some rock / metal fans might think that there are still too many keyboards.... But they are heavier than on their previous releases, more rock. Some might compare them with their label colleagues Lacuna Coil and there are some similarities, but they are different! Everyone who liked Jade, will like Serpentine as well. Serpentine sounds more mature, it's kinda back to the basics...
Check out: Serpentine, The Marching Song and The Carnage People.

Take The Gathering and Lacuna Coil in a decent mixture, well balanced and you get pretty close to what Flowing Tears is. That's nothing negative, coz both bands are quite popular and successful. Nowadays it ain't easy to create something new, usually there is an influence, an element of this or that.
Flowing Tears presents on their current release 12 tracks. The sextet is fronted by Stefanie Duchêne and offers about 45 minutes of gothic rock. The band from Saarbrücken already got good critics for international media.
The band was founded in 1994, later there cut down their name to Flowing Tears and guitarists Benjamin Buss and Manfred Bersin, Frederic Lesny on bass, Mike Volz on keyboard and drummer Eric Hilt started to conquer Europe.
Melancholy songs make it easy for the listener to forget about all and everything and just to listen to the lovely voice of Miss Duchêne. The melancholy sounds kinda enchant the listener and let him discover new dimensions. The album been recorded at the famous Woodhouse Studio under the control of producer Waldemar Sorychta who make this album sound brilliant.
If they manage to bring this atmosphere to the stage, they will make new friends. In the past they were able to convince the audience and so it won't be easy for the headliners...

A new signing to Century Media and for most metal and gothic fans a newcomer... the German band Flowing Tears. A few might remember Flowing Tears & Withered Flowers who had the chance to present themselves at RockHard's CD Unerhört which features unsigned bands. The sextett from Saarbrücken aren't newcomer! Their debut Swansongs been released in 1996 and the follow-up was the first recording with Stefanie Duchêne. Now a new full-length album is in the stores... Jade.
Jade presents 12 songs, gothic rock with female vocals... Personally I like their sound, especially coz Stefanie's voice is different to most of her colleagues. But without her band which build a solid playground for her vocals it won't work!
If you like gothic rock and bands like Lacuna Coil and The Gathering... Check them out!
