Fireland II

Fireland II
(self-released - 2010)

The band Fireland was founded in 2003 to play heavy, riff-based metal. Their EP Fireland II is available for download for free. Time to check out the band from Belfast.
The opener is called Hollow Gods and is heavy, guitar-driven metal spiced up with a dash of thrash, but also offers fat backing vocals and dual lead guitar passages. Save Your Prayers is a mid-paced tune which has a catchy refrain. Somehow it make me think of The Almighty, even if this comparison won't explain it at all. Why Not is another riff-based rocker. The chorus sounds somehow familiar, but I can't fathom it... Anyway, well done. It's not like band name's popping up while listening to Fireland, even if you will find some similarities. Some guitar parts are a bit DragonForce-like, but they Belfast guys aren't focus on playing fast, it's the song which has priority, even if there are some fast passages and even complex structures. The closer is a short instrumental called Doodlebug, where they speed off a bit and close the EP with a big bang.
Well, it would be interesting to hear more of these guys, as it's not another band sounding like the last big thing. It seems that there influences are vast and that they try to combine the different sounds. Not perfectly, but it's well done.
