This is the second album of the Italian band Evenfall, their debut Still In The Grey Dying was released back in 1999. Since that days the line-up changed and also the musical direction. These days the Italian septet offer a mixture of atmospheric death / black metal with elements of gothic metal and some electronic sounds. So they are crossing musical boarders, but will find listeners in the gothic metal scene as well as in the death / black metal scene, as long as the listeners are open-minded enough. A good idea about what to expect give the tracks In Absentia Christi (for the death metal heads) and Dogma (for the more gothic metal fans)!
The title track Cumbersome is also a good choice to check them out. There are parallels to Theatre Of Tragdy, to the old and the new. As the old TOT they work with the death metal kinda vocals of Ansgar Zöschg and the angel-like voice of Roberta Staccuneddu, similarities to new TOT with the electro sounds. Very interesting is the cover version of the Heroes Del Silencio hit Entre dos tierras where Roberta Staccuneddu and Ansgar Zöschg were joined by ex-Psychotic Waltz singer Devon Graves who is also known as Buddy Lackey. From the beginning you can identify the track, but they present it in their own musical melange. Well done, even if the fans of the Spanish might hate it...
Actually, it's hard to give a rating for this, coz it's crossing musical borders and so you should give it a try and make up your mind.

Ups, an Italian band! The band name gives a hint that this isn't another Rhapsody clone. Evenfall play a strange mixture of gothic elements, death metal-based vocals and strange keyboard sounds. Most vocal parts are sang by Roberta Staccuneddu. Her lovely, angel-like singing was ended during the refrain by the death growls. The tracks Rawish and Frontloader are putting the listener under a spell, even if the unreal sound collages in the middle part aren't fitting to the rest of the song. The band has their own identity and if you know the early The Gathering, you will like Evenfall's Cumbersome. Not my cup of tea, but worth giving a try.
