Killing My Dreams

Killing My Dreams
(Massacre Records - 2012)

In 2009 Greek gothic metal outfit Elysion released their debut album Silent Scream, now Massacre Records present an EP to shorten the time til their next full-length, but it's a digital-only release. And so interesting for fans who like to have different version of the songs and for people who only know a track or two and want to discover more of Elysion.

The title track Killing My Dreams you'll find in 3 different versions, a studio version, an acoustic one and a live recording. Sure, all songs are known, but it's nice to hear how Elysion sound live. The acoustic version of Killing My Dreams shows a different facet and I have to say that I really like the acoustic version! It gives Christianna more space. There is only one more acoustic song - Don't Say A Word. At the acoustic version Christianna reminds me a lot of Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia... A different story is Never Forever which is a demo version, so it's rawer and sound-wise not as polished as on the album. The last 4 tracks are live versions and give an idea about Elysion live.

Fans need to decide, if the different versions are worth buying the digital release, but I think it's good to see different facets of Elysion. You can get the songs at from Massacre Records MP3 Store for € 4,99 or from any major MP3 store.

Silent Scream

Silent Scream
(Massacre Records - 2009)

Elysion are a gothic metal band from Greece and their demo was 'demo of the month' at Germany's Metal Hammer and when the release of their debut was announced, more then just a few gothic metal fans were anxiously waiting to hear Silent Scream.

The foursome opens up with Dreamer, a heavy, catchy gothic tune which shows Christianna as a powerful and expressive singer. The song is bombastic, epic, synths-laden and has a melancholy touch. More synths you'll get with Killing My Dreams, but also heavy guitar riffs and so this one is 'NDH meets Depeche Mode' with vocals which remind me of Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil). At Never Forever Christianna slighty reminds me of Anneke van Giersbergen... But the song is quite heavy, even with it's catchy hook. At Don't Say A Word they first remind me of The Gathering again, then more Lacuna Coil-like... I love both bands, so I don't mind at all; anybody remembering them touring together? But I zone out.... The Rules will hook you up right away, perhaps the best song to get into Elysion.... At Walk Away the guitar line partly sounds like Savatage... But only for a moment, most of the song has a slight Arabic touch. The closer Erase Me kicks off with spoken words and heavy riffs. Nice... But unfortunately the 2nd half of the album isn't as strong as the first... Anyway, the Greek present a strong debut, but still have to find their own identity. Keep an eye on them!
