Doctor Butcher (re-release)

Doctor Butcher (re-release)
(Black Lotus Records - 2005)

Many fans are searching for the Doctor Butcher album - for the debut album and for The Demos!!! - and so now Black Lotus Records is presenting a re-release of the debut album with a bonus CD. The bonus CD has some of the original demo recordings like Freaks, Born Of The Board, Help! Police? and Bridges. Beside that they offer Inspector Highway, a song which was written in 1992, but never been released. For this re-release they recorded the song in Febuary 2005. Here Chris Caffery - who produced this one with Nik Chinboukas - and Jon Oliva got joined by Jeff Plate, Dave Z (guitars), Paul Morris (piano), Dave Eggar (strings) and Mike Chlasciak (Halford) playing a solo. All songs are re-mastered.
The double CD comes in a digi-pack format with a different artwork. A booklet with photos and lyrics, beside that there is a leaflet with a note from Jon and Chris.

Doctor Butcher

Doctor Butcher
(G.U.N. Records - 1994)

Since I first heard about this band I was curious, coz this is the first sign of Jon Oliva since he left Savatage. And he is joined by former Savatage guitarist Chris Caffery who also wrote the songs together with Mr. Oliva. And the first seconds make sure that this is something we can't expect from Savatage these days! Screaming guitars and vocals which we know from the early releases of their former band. Recorded at the famous Morrisound Studios in Tampa with co-producer Jim Morris the dynamic duo also produced this one. Seems that they want to keep control about their music these days... The Altar is the opening track and shows which direction they chose! This is what fans expected from Savatage before they became more epic and orchestral. This could have been the follow up of Hall Of The Mountain King. Songs like Don't Talk To Me are aggressive, really heavy and powerful. The a surprise, the song Juice is more a short piece to introduce the following track, but just guitars and at the end just a few words, then Jon's laughter and The Chair kicks off. Again a heavy one with a certain portion of anger which fits to the lyrics.
On Innocent Victim bass player Brian Gregory started the song before the screaming guitar of Chris Caffery and drummer John 'Ozzy' Osbourne joins in. On that track they worked partly with distorted vocals, but not at all.
I won't talk anymore about this one! Just buy and listen! This is a masterpiece!

The Demos!!!

The Demos!!!
(US Import - 1992/1999)

This is not really new, but the latest release of Doctor Butcher. Chris Caffery and Jon Oliva often got asked about a new Doctor Butcher album, but recording and touring with Savatage and TSO kept them busy. So they decided to release the 1992 demo and 2 live tracks. Songs like The Altar and The Chair are released on the debut, but this is a different version. On a the album Jon Olive and Chris Caffery were joint by some friends... this is not the line-up of the debut! On the demo tracks Hal Patino (King Diamond) and Gene Barnett (Lillian Axe / Dirty Looks) played. Live the partners in crime got joint by John Osbourne and Reno Rojas. The live tracks Chester, The Molester and A Living Hell been recorded in Clearwater, Florida in July 1993. If anyone doesn't know the band, check out the self-titles debut, but if you like the debut, got the demos!!!
