Fear Yourself?

Fear Yourself
(Cyclone Empire - 2009)

Darkness By Oath was founded in 2002 and they released their debut in 2005, now they are back with Fear Yourself. The Spanish present a CD full of At The Gates sounds... The Gothenborg sound is their home, coz there are also references to In Flames and other Swedish acts. They open up with the title track, a fast death metal tune. Usually they are categorized as melodic death metal, but that doesn't fit 100%, coz they partly lack the melodies other genre bands do have. Soon it becomes crystal clear that they stick to the sound of their heroes At The Gates, but that also means that they lack originality. At Pieces the guitars add a melody line, but with My Own Mind the Spaniards storm off. A raw death metal track with fast drums and riffs, but also with a slower, more melodic passage. Partly singer Aritz Navarro growls, but sometimes he's closer to scolding... Slower and quite melodic they kick off Kingdom Of Denial, but then they speed up and the growls take off the melodic edge the guitars create.
Fans of At The Gates might find Fear Yourself interesting as it takes them back in time. But I doubt that it's enough to draw the attention... Darkness By Oath have to develop their own style. They need to add some originality, if they want to have a chance to stick.
