_adrift_ - Claudia Ehrhardt - 7 stars

(self-released - 2010)

Dark Matter is a new band from Ireland, the trio is now presenting their first EP _adrift_. The band was founded by members of thrash outfit Full Shred and Gothic band Gora, but now they present instrumental music. They take elements from different genres and combine them to an atmospheric and dark melange. The opener is Compression Syndrome and the riffs reminds me a bit of Iced Earth while the keyboards give it a symphonic touch, later adds some electro sounds. Monolith shows their gothic roots, but again they mix it with other sounds. At the beginning it made me think of Paradise Lost (Draconian Times / One Second era), but there is a symphonic element too. Later the song atmosphere changes and it has a prog rock touch for awhile before returning to the opening theme. Neptune is a short one which is more like an interlude, at least it feels like that after the 7+ minute long Monolith. The Persistence Of Memory is the last track, another riff-based track, but offers atmospheric passages too. Towards the end it gets a bit too repetitive....
Well, I'm not a big fan of instrumental music and so I miss vocals. But everybody who is into instrumental music and looks for something else, not the next shred orgy, check out Dark Matter.
