Blunt Force Trauma

Blunt Force Trauma
(Roadrunner Records - 2011)

Reunited Cavalera brothers Max and Igor took the metal scene by storm when they released in 2008 their debut Inflikted. They revived the sound of their early days and offered a fierce mix of thrash - like in the early days of Sepultura - and hardcore, crust and punk. They used the same ingredients for Blunt Force Trauma, but add some traditional heavy metal elements. The new album has a dirty, mangy sound, killer tunes like Torture, Thrasher, Target and neckbreakers like Burn Waco shows that the brothers are dead serious. This is what fans were waiting for! Stuff Sepultura haven't delivered for a long time! To add a bit variety they offer some groove metal gems á la Warlord or the industrial-like Killing Inside. With guest vocalist Roger Miret (Agnostic Front) they render homage to aggressive hardcore - but that was something to expect from a combination like this. I Speak Hate is a bit bulky with it's staccato refrain, but guitarist Marc Rizzo save it with some Maiden-ish guitar harmonies and a cool solo. Genghis Khan and the brutal Rasputin invite you to sing/shout along, Cavalera Conspiracy add some up-tempo parts, some heavy grooves and at the title track they return to their thrash metal roots.

At the end I can just say that Cavalera Conspiracy sound more like Sepultura than Sepultura is these days and so everybody who's disappointed by the latest Sepultura releases should get a copy of Blunt Force Trauma! Okay, this isn't another classic, not like the stuff they recorded with the original Sepultura line-up, but this album is way better then everything Sepultura released without Max! Let's see, if the upcoming Sepultura album can keep up with this one...

I should mention that the special edition has 3 bonus tracks and an additional live-DVD, unfortunately I haven't got that one for reviewing.
