On disc: Bethroned

- WarLords - Claudia Ehrhardt - 8 stars

(self-released - 2008)

In 2005 Lord Vargoth and Blackstorm founded Dark Possession, the predecessor of Bethroned. After awhile they realized that they have to add some members to achieve the sound they wanted - and become Bethroned. After the first demo The Forsaken Legacy Lord Vargoth wasn't satisfied about how it turned out and decided to go on all alone. And so WarLords was recorded only by Lord Vargoth.
An almost 2 minutes long intro leads you in with a simple drum beat and atmospheric keyboard sounds. The Croatian one-man-band is based in Scandinavian black metal - as the Burzum cover Dunkelheit shows. The clear, powerful production let you get every detail - and shows that Lord Valgoth is handling the task very well. And with songs about 5 minutes and more it needs some variety which Lord Vargoth can give, not just with vocals ranging from clean vocals to screams and growls. A good example for Bethroned's sound is Raventhrone, more mid-paced without hyper-fast riffing, but with a lot of energy and emotion. Musically partly a bit minimalistic it supports the anger in the voice and towards the end you even get a blasting guitar riffs.
Meanwhile Lord Vargoth signed a deal with the Russian label Folk Records and soon there should be an EP or album out... So be aware!
